This is a home recipe to clean your mattress without going to a whole lot of trouble. Mattresses get forgotten, yet harbor nasty little creatures.
Pour about 1 cup of …baking soda into a Mason jar & drop in 4 drops of lavender essential oil. Put on lid & shake jar. Using a kitchen strainer, sprinkle the baking soda mixture all over the mattress & let it sit for an hour or more. Thoroughly vacuum the mattress. Bye, bye dust mites, & other nasty things. The baking soda helps draw up any moisture & deep dirtiness. It deodorizes & leaves the mattress smelling fresh & clean.

HAPPY APRIL 30 BIRTHDAY TO: Johnny Galecki 38, Kunal Nayaar 32, Willie Nelson 80, Merill Osmond 60, Kirsten Dunst 31, Steven Harper 54, Cloris Leachman 87, Paul Gross 54, and Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster)(1923-2006).

HOME-MADE TICK REPELLENT RECIPE: Mix organic apple cider 50/50 with water and spray or comb into your dog’s fur. It will act as a repellent and condition the skin.

MYTH: Smothering the tick with Vaseline or burning it with a match is a good way to remove a tick. FACT: Both methods traumatize the tick and it releases fluid into the skin which can lead to infection.

TICK REMOVAL: You will need tweezers, rubbing alcohol, cotton ball, soap, a pill bottle with a lid. Sterilize the tweezers with the rubbing alcohol or wash thoroughly with soap. Slide the tweezers as close to the skin as you can and pull straight up (do not twist). The tick may take a chunk of skin with it or leave the mouth parts attached to the skin. Do not worry, the mouth parts cannot release any bacteria once the body is gone. Pull the mouth parts off the skin and rub with an alcohol soaked cotton ball.

TICK DISPOSAL: Place the tick in the seal-able pill bottle, a Zip-Lock bag or attach it to a piece of tape and throw it in the garbage. DO NOT flush the tick as they can survive very well in water.

SIGN IN A SHOP WINDOW: We offer three kinds of service. GOOD – FAST – CHEAP You can pick any two.GOOD service CHEAP won’t be FAST. GOOD service FAST won’t be CHEAP. FAST service CHEAP won’t be GOOD

Buying a set of dishes can be a really easy task, but first you have to get past the large selection of colored and patterned plates, bowls and cups that are seasonally offered. Dishes with roses on them, contemporary or traditional patterns, wild animals, seasonal patterns, etc might all be quite beautiful or fun to look at, but you are locked into a certain amount of colors you can only use if you purchase them. If you buy dishes that have Thanksgiving or Christmas theme patterns on them, you will only be able to use them for a short window of time, and you then have to also have a place to store them, when not in use. My suggestion to you, if you are buying dishes for your first apartment or house, or are just tired of what you have, is to purchase white ones. People will give you seasonal or colored dishes in years to come and they can be easily ‘worked into’ the blank canvas, that is white dishes.

(1) White dishes (sometimes called Whiteware), are versatile, they go with any color table-cloth, table runner, place mats or napkins you choose to use. (2) White dishes go with any wallpaper or paint colors you decide to use in your dining room or kitchen. (3) White dishes go with any style of decorating that attracts you; from country to traditional, transitional or modern. Consider layering a patterned dessert plate on top of the dinner plate for added interest. (4) Food looks best on white plates. You don’t have a color or pattern on white dishes that competes with that gourmet meal, or fancy dessert you created. (5) Restaurants and most caterers use only white dishes. (6) Round white plates can easily be mixed with other shapes or “textures” of white dishes. Think simple white dishes, along with a white platter in a sculptural relief embossed pattern, shaped like a Thanksgiving turkey. (7) White dishes are versatile; they can be dressed up with fine crystal and silver, or dressed down with rustic looking glassware and casual flatware like Bakelite. (8) White dishes are appropriate for fine dining inside, or outside at poolside for Summer barbecues. (9) White dishes are season neutral. With the right table-cloth, and cloth or paper napkins you have endless possibilities. (10) White dishes don’t compete with any flower arrangement or decorations you use as a seasonal tabletop display.(11) White dishes with no kind of metallic banding should go from dishwasher to microwave with no problems. (12) White dishes are timeless. Not evocative of any period or datable, they look great right now, and will still look fresh, clean and new in 20 years.

If you are still a bit apprehensive about purchasing white dishes, even with the list of their 12 positive attributes, then go for a white plate with a simple dark blue, green, brown or rust-red banding at its edge. Dishes with simple dark blue or dark bottle green banding will go with many different patterns on paper napkins. Those two colors are often used as a part of a color story for the napkin’s design. When shopping for different shapes, styles or manufacturers of white plates to go with what you already have, bring a dish from your collection with you to see if what you are thinking about buying matches the color of white you already have. There are gray-whites, cream-whites, pure white and even some whites with a pale tan cast.

Finally, you do not have to only buy / have all white dishes. Supplement your basic white set, if you like, with meat platters, vegetable bowls, etc that are in colors or seasonal themed patterns, but try to have white as part of their pattern. A collection of a few Chinese blue and white serving dishes, or white dishes with brown patterns on them, or Christmas plates, etc would accentuate the core collection of white dishes, and adds a bit of theme / seasonal interest. With just a collection of assorted patterns and colors on serving dishes, you have less product to store when not in use.

DIY – Teeth Whitener

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEETH ‘SNOW WHITE’ – Put a tiny bit of toothpaste into a small cup, mix in one teaspoon baking soda … plus one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, and half a teaspoon water. Thoroughly mix then brush your teeth for two minutes. Remember to do it once a week until you have reached the results you want. Once your teeth are good and white, limit yourself to using the whitening treatment once every month or two.

MOVIE REVIEW: Ignoring the 1-out-of-five-stars review in the newspaper yesterday, we went to see BIG WEDDING anyway. When the movie theatre is half full on opening night, it should tell you something…and it did. It wouldn’t be worth seeing at the Rainbow for $2.50.
THOUGHT OF THE DAY: I don’t know why people find drunk texts so annoying. You’re the person they’re thinking about when their brain isn’t even functioning properly.

Design Basics For Decks

To get the most out of your all-too-limited relaxation time, consider your interests, needs and budget when creating your design. What are your pastimes? Will your deck be the family hub for activity or a peaceful retreat? Plan for changes as the kids grow up, let the deck grow with them.

What kind of entertaining will the deck be used for? Do you plan large parties, intimate dinners, casual get-togethers, or elegant gatherings? Do the men gravitate to one area and the women to another area?

What about color? How do you want to feel when you sit out on your deck? Do you want a tropical vacation feel or sophisticated or a lake feel? Once you have decided that, it is time to move ahead.

What about practical considerations? Is there a view from the deck to be enjoyed or one to be blocked? Can you take advantage of natural shade, or would umbrellas and a permanent or retractable awning answer your needs? Would you like a pond with the sound of running water (possibly to block neighbor or traffic noise)? By taking the time to understand how a deck would best fit your lifestyle, you can create an outdoor room that you will enjoy for years to come.

WE RECOMMEND: Buy quality outdoor furnishings…you will never be sorry.

New Use For Vicks

To stop nighttime coughing in a child or an adult, put Vicks Vapor Rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime and then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about five minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. This works 100 percent of the  time, although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren’t sure why. It is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

Tips To Tame Shelf Clutter

TIPS TO TAME SHELF CLUTTER: 1.) As you load the shelf, step back every few minutes to view the overall look. It will save time, if in the end, you are unhappy with it and have to start over. 2.) Do not be afraid to use splashes of color, say, in a mask or some other trinket you have picked up on a vacation. Keep the color theme running through the other shelves in your unit. 3.) If the shelving unit has a closed back and you want to add interest, wallpaper the a couple of the cubes and place an interesting statue in that cube. 4.) if a statue or trinket is small in scale on the shelf, set it on a stack of books or a decorative box. 5.) Use this decorative box to hide little bits of clutter that don’t have a place on the shelf. 6.) Hang (or lean) a small framed picture or shadow box on the shelf and place small items in front. Don’t worry too much about covering up part of the picture. 7.) Do you have an antique flat-iron or a family heirloom? Display it front and center, don’t hide it. Some antiques work very well in contemporary settings. 8.) Repeat it. Symmetry is important, repeat a stack of books throughout the display. 9.) If the books are too different and cannot be arranged in any way that looks cohesive, cover the offending books in white paper or newsprint to ground the look. 10.) Great bookshelf items include globes, statues, small pictures or mirrors, wicker baskets (for the clutter), pencil jar with all the same color of pencils, decorative boxes and vases, bookends, mantle clocks or big pieces of faux coral for that ‘feel good’ item.

Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons

On Saturday April 20 Mona and myself from Charter House Interiors attended the Saskatoon Prayer Breakfast where, we not only got to meet Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons but got a VIP photo-op with him. We wore Argo jerseys which certainly helped us get a shoe-in with one of the top speakers in the country. Pinball is upbeat,  humble and tireless, we were over-the-moon honored to meet him. Guest soloist Sonia Reid sang Oh Canada and The Lord’s Prayer…what a voice! The food was good, hot and plentiful considering the catering staff were feeding over 800 people in less than an hour. Well done. Mayor Don Atchison was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on the Dedicated Contributions and Service to his Peers. The Mayor, in his speech, did promise to keep Chrismas in Saskatoon. Thank you for that. Pairieland Park always puts on top notch events and kudos to all the sponsors of this event.
