Why Epsom Salt?

  • After a tree has been felled, the root network will continue to feed the stump. A living stump will not rot and may grow new shoots. Epsom salt (or magnesium sulfate) is hygroscopic, which means the crystals absorb water. In sufficient quantity, Epsom salt pulls moisture from the wood, which then kills the tree.

There are many substances that could be applied to a tree stump to kill it, but Epsom salt has advantages over other stump removal chemicals. Rock salt or caustic lye would dry out the wood, but high sodium levels could make it difficult to replant after the stump has been removed. Commercial stump removal preparations contain potassium nitrate, which aids decomposition but does little to kill a living stump. Epsom salt kills the stump while improving the surrounding soil by adding magnesium and sulfur; plants require both for chlorophyll production.

    Application

  • Drill holes in the top of the stump with a one inch spade bit. The number of holes you will drill is dependent upon how large the stump top is–start your holes three inches from the perimeter of the stump and keep them three to four inches apart until you run out of room. Bore the holes as deeply as you can–at least eight inches into the base of the stump. Pour 100 percent Epsom salt into the holes and add enough water to moisten the salt. This moisture will carry the salts into the cells of the tree, drying them out. Then use a mattock or grub hoe to uncover as much as the root structure as you can. Pour a thick layer of Epsom salt on all exposed roots to prevent to roots from carrying moisture and nutrients to the base of the tree. Place a plastic bag over the tree stump to keep the moisture in.

Larger stumps may take up to 6 months to die, so plan to reapply the Epsom salt every month or so. Brittle, dark wood is dead; while soft, light wood will require another application of Epsom salt. A dead stump will decompose naturally, though you can speed the process by adding a high nitrogen fertilizer to the bore holes and around the base of the stump.

Freeze Fresh Herbs In Their Oil

This is a clever way to save fresh herbs. Freeze the herbs in their own oil and toss into a fry pan or soup pot when needed. How to Freeze Fresh Herbs in oil or butter
Directions:
Choose fresh herbs from the market or your own garden.
Dice them well, or leave on branches and leaves. The herbs are finely diced in the photo.
… Put them on trays of ice cubes (about 2/3 full of herbs).
You can mix herbs (sage, thyme, rosemary).
Place unsalted melted butter or extra virgin olive oil over the herbs.
Cover with plastic.
Freeze.
Remove frozen cubes and store in small containers or bags to freeze.
Do not forget to mark each container or bag with the type of herbs (and oil) inside!
Enjoy!

SAYING OF THE DAY: The best way to get a man to do something? Suggest he’s too old for it.

TO ALL THE EXES OUT THERE: Someone (meaning the ex) is alive today simply because the other one doesn’t want to go to prison. LOL.

HAPPY JULY 29 BIRTHDAY TO: Patty Scialfa (even rockers turn) 60, Peter Jennings (1938-2005), Martina McBride 47, Josh Radnor 39, Will Wheaton 41, Tim Gunn 60, Ted Lindsay 88 who organized the NHL Players Union.

Here’s how it works. You take a smaller pot and put it inside a larger pot. Fill the space in between them with wet sand, and cover the top with a wet cloth. When the water evaporates, it pulls the heat out with it, making the inside cold. It’s a natural, cheap, easy-to-make refrigerator. So, instead of perishable foods rotting after only three days, they can last up to three weeks.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY: When I was a kid, I was scared of the dark. Now when I see my electrical bill, I am scared of the lights.

HAPPY JULY 28 BIRTHDAY TO: Lori Loughlin 49, Jaqueline Onnassis Kennedy (1929-1994), Terry Fox (1958-1981), Beatrix Potter (1866-1943), Rudy Valee (1901-1986), Jim Davis 68, Sally Struthers 65, and Dustin Milligan 28.

Something as simple as an oddly shaped tree branch found on a hike could easily become a unique sculptural centerpiece, or use it as part of an assemblage with other found objects. Fill niches with objects from nature…twigs, branches, seashells, stone filled glass vases. For and extra bit of punch, back-light or up-light this arrangement. Giant tumbleweeds make the best 3-D wall art in a high stairwell. To create an edgy feel to nature, paint branches in a high gloss paint in bold colors.

Focus on the Earth’s beauty by accessorizing with natural objects. This dresser, made from salvaged oak, is outfitted with twisted tree roots, a lamp with a driftwood base, and framed photographs of greenery. The grass wallpaper is an especially earthy touch, the room would not be the same without it.

JOKE OF THE DAY: If a woman is upset, hold her and tell her how beautiful she is. If she starts to growl, retreat to a safe distance and throw chocolate at her.

ANOTHER NOT-SO-JOKE-OF-THE-DAY: I have decided that I no longer want to be an adult. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in my tree house coloring and eating fruit loops.

JULY 27th IS: National Sleepy Head Day (Finland) – Finnish tradition, which dictates that the last person sleeping in the house must be woken up with water or by being thrown in a body of water.

HAPPY JULY 27 BIRTHDAY TO: A-Rod 38, Maya Rudolph 41, Julian McMahon 44, Jerry Van Dyke 82, Betty Thomas 65, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau 43, Jonathon Rhys Myers 36, Bobbie Gentrie 69, Norman Lear 91, Nick Hogan 23, and Seamus Deaver 37.

Upholster an ordinary hollow-core door in leather, or one of the new vinyls that look like leather. You can make the door padded by gluing batting to the door before applying the leather or vinyl. Leather cannot be purchased in a piece large enough to cover an entire door so measure the door width and height and divide into equal sections. Cut squares of leather and place them randomly on the door until a suitable look is achieved and attach the leather with glue or staples. If you have the patience, add nail heads in a geometric pattern. If you do not have the patience there are nail head strips available; applying these strips is much easier. Choose hardware for the door that compliments the leather. A door such as this is excellent for a designated home office space. It looks professional, rich and gives the impression of stability.

Being in the furniture retail business, we have seen many shifts in home decorating from painting ceilings bold colors to using old trunks as chic coffee tables. One thing getting more popular is ditching the traditional sofa for four chairs or a love seat and a couple of chairs. In fact, on a personal note, we have had four leather chairs and two rattan chairs in our living room for years. We have friends over to play cards often and four chairs allows optimum comfort and personal space to enjoy a glass of wine and snacks. The seating space in the photo (above) is formal and a bit ‘stuffy’ for most tastes but the colors are soft, the fireplace is the focal point and it is a good conversation room. Why choose chairs over a sofa arrangement? Some rooms lend themselves to chairs that can be positioned to watch television better or easily moved to make room for a Christmas tree. The middle seat on a sofa will always be the last seat to be taken when there is a houseful of guests. Add an ottoman with the chair and you’ve got super comfort for a relaxing evening in front of the television or reading a book. Still, most people have a sofa/loveseat/chair combination; because it fits the room layout. When it is time to replace your furniture, give some thought to a different arrangement.

A Quick Answer For Shower Clutter

This trick is a lifesaver for homes with the entire family sharing one bathroom space. A tension shower rod will do the trick to keep bathroom clutter at bay. Purchase plastic baskets with holes for drainage and plastic hooks to hang them with. If you can find different colored baskets for each family member, then the kids can have their own personalized basket. Teenagers have a lot of bathroom products so having their own basket keeps their clutter to a minimum. The tub enclosure is easier to keep clean with nothing sitting on the ledge, you can even have a basket designated for cleaning products. The extra rod can be used to hang hand washable ‘dainty lady items’. Pull the shower curtain closed when guests come over.

Always wanted to know how this was done!!
Prepare 3 or 4 glasses of warm water with different food coloring. Make sure to use a lot of coloring, the stronger the better. Use cream or white roses and split the bottom of the stem in 4 pieces, about 2 inches high. Put each piece in a different color water and let sit for approximately 36 -48 hours.

Awhile back, most of the home decorating shows on television shunned live plants, opting instead for one huge leaf in a vase on a table instead. Silk plants were definitely the pariah of the decorating industry. The trend is switching back to where plants and trees are popular again…and why not? They add warmth, ambiance and “life” to a room; they fill spaces where nothing else is right and they filter sunlight. Keeping plants inside the room not only adds to the decor but indoor plants improve the air and keep the room cool and fresh. Of course, there is the care associated with live plants but it is well worth the effort.

Silk plants can be your new best decorating friend if you buy quality silk plants. Look for  plants with new and old growth, check if the branches are finished well; tapered and the tips concealed with moss or some another covering. Stay away from the $39.00 six foot ficus tree type of silk, it’ll cheapen the entire room. Busy people on the go, snowbirds and cabin owners will find artificial plants and trees a real blessing. No maintenance, just get up and go. Once a year or so, spray on a silk plant cleaner and that’s it. The hottest trend in artificial plants are succulent gardens. Clear glass vases, bowls, apothecary jars and even drinking glasses are the perfect vessel. Use river rock as a base, maybe a bit of moss and the succulent is all that is needed.
