Clean And Single Socks Find A Home

Missing Sock Saver

This adorable print is both pretty and functional. Simply print out the free artwork, frame it, and use a hot glue gun to secure clothespins to the bottom. When socks emerge without their pair, hang the single from a clothespin until its match resurfaces from the depths of your washer.

Trim A Giant Builders Mirror

We live in military housing, which is like a rental in that all of the changes that make (no matter how wonderful:) have to be returned to original condition when we move out. We had a GIANT mirror in our master bathroom, and I was not a fan. I decided to trim it using molding, which you’ve probably seen before, but I couldn’t make this a permanent change.
Time: 2 Hours Cost: $30 Difficulty: Easy

I always like to see the “after” first!

Here’s what the great big mirror looked like “before.”
  • diy tutorial add trim around a giant mirror great idea for renters, bathroom ideas, how to, painted furniture, wall decor, woodworking projects
I used my trusty HomeRight FinishMax sprayer to apply Rust-Oleum Ultimate stain (I used Dark Walnut) to no-miter trim. Even though I have a miter saw, I like the look of the decorative square blocks at the corners. A coat of clear polyurethane finished off the preparation.

Be sure to stain the back of your pieces; you will see the unfinished wood in the mirror’s reflection if you don’t!

Believe it or not, I used a hot glue gun to adhere all of the pieces, with the exception of the top piece of trim. I used a single nail in the center with that, along with some hot glue. Hot glue scrapes easily off smooth surfaces (like a mirror) using a razor blade when it’s time to move away. And I can always trim my wood to fit and use it again on the next giant mirror!

DO Create An Entryway

Does your front door skip the entryway and head straight for the living room? Many apartments or townhouses simply do not have the square footage necessary to allow a proper entryway with a closet.

Add a console table or cabinet and layer in artwork and accessories. The vignette will create a pause between the doorway and the living room space and give the illusion of an entryway. Did we mention this also creates extra storage?

Re-purpose an old armoire if it isn’t too bulky to hang coats and purses. Take the doors off and wall paper the back with bold colored paper or paint the back with a bold color.

If the space is really tight, there are console tables as narrow as 10″ wide. It will still provide the separation needed. Plus, adding a mirror over the table will help make the space feel larger. (that has been said a million times because it works.)

Tip For The Craft Painters Out There

TIP: When you’re working on an art project, dab the colors you need onto a CD. (Place one finger in the hole to keep the CD stable.) The CD disc is light and easy to hold on to…and who doesn’t have a few scratched CD’s kicking around. This is suitable for small art projects. After you’re done painting, slip the disc into a plastic sandwich bag and easily dispose of it.

JOKE OF THE DAY: I miss being a kid. My only responsibilities were running around and laughing a lot. And someone else was in charge of my hair.

HAPPY FEBRUARY 25 BIRTHDAY TO: Rashida Jones 38, Isabelle Furman 18, Sean Astin 44, James Phelps 29, Oliver Phelps 29, Tea Leoni 49, Sally Jesse Raphael 80, George Harrison (1943-2001), and Jim Backus (1913-1989).

This would brighten up any dull space. Pallet, paint, colorful plastic milkshake containers, brackets and plants… Think of all the things you could hide with a brightly painted pallet wall…a compost pile, garbage cans, re-cycling bids, garden tools and the list goes on. Use a wall like this to separate sections in the yard. Pallets are quite often free, drink cups are inexpensive and so are brackets. The biggest cost will be a bit of paint.

Can These Laundry Mistakes Be Saved?

Basket of laundry dyed pink
Towels that are no longer absorbent
Fix it: The most likely culprit is fabric softener. It can coat terry cloth with a waxy, water-resistant film that ruins the very mission of towels. To dissolve the buildup and restore the fluff, wash the towels the next few times with 1/4 cup white vinegar added to the rinse cycle, and skip the softener in the future.
Sweater with a bleach stain Forget it: Sorry, you’re out of luck. Your only choice is to dye the whole garment its original shade. Or, if the stain is tiny, try spot-dyeing with an eyedropper.
Load of whites turned pink (that *@#%&! red sock!)
Fix it: Soak the discolored stuff in a sink filled with water and bleach (10 parts water to 1 part bleach) or OxiClean (read the label for the amount). Check every 15 minutes or so and remove when white; 90 minutes should be more than enough. Then machine wash. Still pink? Try Rit Whitener and Brightener.Shrunken wool Forget it: This is baaad. Unless the wool has been treated (the garment label will indicate this), the fibers constrict in water. There really is no remedy.

Load left sitting in the washer for 24 hours Fix it: Rewash the load with 1 cup white vinegar (and no detergent) to kill the mildew odor.

Load left sitting in the dryer  Fix it: Don’t worry—the wrinkles haven’t set in forever. Toss in a damp, clean hand towel and run the dryer for a few minutes. The steam created should relax the wrinkles.

Sold! You’ve bought a new house or moved into a new apartment, and now it’s time to unpack. Do you unpack just the essentials first, or go room to room?

Before you get lost among all the boxes, consider these tips from organizing experts on how to make unpacking as stress-free as possible.

Prepare by packing properly: “Unpacking can only be as easy as how you pack,” says Denise Davis, owner of highly rated Effective Organizing Solutions in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She suggests labeling boxes to indicate the contents and the room in which they belong.

“I recently moved, and I got those little index cards that are spiral bound where they all stay together, and labeled each pack with the room they were in,” she says. She then labeled each box with a number and wrote it on the corresponding card.

Erin Kelly, owner of highly rated Arranged By Erin in Chicago, prefers color coding boxes with rooms.

“Get color labels. Whether you use construction paper or stickers, color code each room and box so movers put the right color in the right room,” she says.

Unpack one room at a time: Cris Sgrott-Wheedleton, owner of highly rated Organizing Maniacs in Tysons Corner, Virginia, suggests unpacking one room at a time to keep stress at a minimum.

“Some people unpack quickly, but other people it can take them six months to completely unpack,” she says. “If you completely finish one room, when you get frustrated with unpacking another room, you can go back to the finished room and it can be a peaceful place.”

Make a playlist to get in the moving groove: Sometimes all you need is a little music to get you in the mood. Sgrott-Wheedleton says that creating a playlist of upbeat music helps to keep you moving. She suggests picking out songs you love that you know will keep you in a positive mood when you start feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or bored.

Store or recycle the boxes: Kelly says sometimes people become overwhelmed when unpacking because of the empty boxes that start to pile up. “Make sure you have a plan on what to do with your boxes,” she says. “Pick a place, maybe a corner of the garage or a specific room, and put the boxes there.” After you’re done unpacking, find a permanent home for the boxes. Davis says if you don’t plan on keeping them, break them down and drop them off at a recycling center.

Create a reward system: Make a goal, Sgrott-Wheedleton says. “If I tell myself I’m going to unpack 10 boxes today, after I get done with those 10 boxes, I’ll reward myself with time outside or ice cream,” she says. “Make the reward whatever makes the person happy. Reward is the best way to motivate people.”
