The Breathing Trick That Puts You to Sleep in Seconds
Sweet slumber can be yours in a minute or less.
BY EMMA LOUISE PRITCHARD

Nothing is worse than lying awake at night, willing your brain to shut down so you can rest. Warm milk, lavender oil, and counting sheep — we’ve all tried them. But the new solution could be simply learning to breathe.

WHAT IS IT?
The 4-7-8 breathing technique was pioneered Dr. Andrew Weill from Arizona, who describes the yoga-inspired method as “utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere.”

Dr.Weill claims that 4-7-8 breathing can help people fall asleep in just 60 seconds by acting as a “natural tranquilizer for the nervous system” that reduces stress and tension in the body.

HOW DO YOU DO IT?
1. Before you begin, place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth just above your teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise.

2. Exhale completely through your mouth quite forcefully so you make a “whoosh” sound.
3. Close your mouth and inhale quietly and softly through your nose for a mental count of four.

4. Hold your breath and count to seven.

5. Next, exhale completely through your mouth, making another whoosh sound for eight seconds in one large breath.

6. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three times for a total of four breaths.

Remember: All inhaling breaths must be quiet and through your nose and all exhaling breaths must be loud and through your mouth.

HOW DOES IT HELP?
1. It takes on more oxygen relaxes the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes a state of calmness.

2. It helps rebalance the nervous system which can become over stimulated during times of stress.

3. It helps you connect with your body and your breathing and distract you from everyday thoughts that can prevent you from sleeping.

Keep Sliced Apples From Browning

Those packages of pre-sliced apples you can buy at store are great for a healthy snack on the go but the price can add up. Make your own by slicing apples, soak in cold water for 3-5 minutes, then soak in a lemon-lime carbonated soda (such as 7-up or sprite) for 3-5 minutes. Divide into snack size portions and store in Ziploc bags in the fridge. The lemon-lime soda will keep the apples from browning and make them last longer. LOVE THIS IDEA!

JOKE OF THE DAY: Anyone remember the good old days? You know, before Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. When you had to take a photo of your dinner, get the film developed and go around to all your friend’s houses to show them what you ate? No? Me neither. So stop it!

The secret to keeping lemons and limes fresh practically forever.
Keep them in a bowl of water in your refrigerator.
Just make sure to refresh the water so that they stay covered, and they’ll taste just like the day you bought them for weeks (or longer)
You can do this even if they have been cut in half or quartered.

‘Frozen’ Inspired Bed Canopy

Navy Wifey Peters Blogger Seattle, WA
Like many other young kids, my daughter LOVES Frozen. She is crazy about Elsa, Ana, and Olaf. So I’ve decided to give her bedroom a Frozen theme, and every little princess needs a canopy for her bed, so I made one for my darling daughter.

After searching online for inspiration, I came up with the idea to use a planter trough as the base for the canopy.

I decided to make fabric rosettes using my daughter’s old pajamas. I used her pink, purple, and blue pjs.

I hot glued the fabric rosette to the metal planter.

Then I glued on a blue curtain and hung it on the wall above the bed.

Elsa and Olaf enjoy hanging out on the bed under the canopy. I guess I need to get an Anna doll, too.

Found this blog on the internet. It hit close to home because I have my grandmother’s old treadle sewing machine…it is in much better shape. I learned to sew Barbie clothes on her machine. This is a cleaver re-purposing idea.
A neighbor was getting rid of a pitiful Singer treadle sewing machine. It was headed to the scrap yard when she “rescued” it for me.

The base and wood had definitely seen better days.

and the poor machine? Someone had stripped her of most of her parts for some reason.

After a good cleaning, some brightly colored spray paint gave the base a fun new look. The best thing about these projects? Paint is so easily changed when you tire of the color.

Serve this for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Biscuits and gravy are incredibly easy to make for a crowd when served in a slow cooker.

1 lb bulk pork sausage

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 can (10 1/2 oz) low-sodium condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 teaspoon fennel seed, crushed (optional)
2 cans (12 oz each) Pillsbury™ Grands!™ Jr. Golden Homestyle refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
  • In 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink. With slotted spoon, remove sausage from skillet to bowl. Set aside.
  • Add butter to pan drippings in skillet; cook over medium heat until butter is melted. Add flour; cook about 1 minute, stirring constantly with whisk, until no lumps remain. Add milk; cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in soup, fennel seed and sausage until combined.
  • Spray 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Separate each can of dough into 10 biscuits; cut each biscuit into quarters. Arrange biscuit pieces in bottom and up side of slow cooker. Pour sausage mixture into slow cooker. Place triple layer of paper towels on top of ingredients in slow cooker.
  • Cover; cook on Low heat setting 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes or until biscuits are cooked through and deep golden brown around edges. Spoon into bowls to serve.
