Happy Halloween 2016

No blog today. Just want to wish everyone out there a safe and fun Halloween.

SHARING: I do not claim all posts to be my own…I post the sites, who and where they originate if the source is known.

HALLOWEEN JOKE OF THE DAY: Halloween is, by far, the safest day to kill a person and leave them in a chair on your front porch.

HALLOWEEN JOKE OF THE DAY 2: Is it me, or does Halloween scarily sound like “Hello wine.” Coincidence? I think not.

THIS DAY IN ENTERTAINMENT: 1926 Escape artist and musician Harry Houdini dies of a ruptured appendix on Halloween.

HAPPY OCTOBER 31 HALLOWEEN BIRTHDAY TO: Piper Perabo 40, Rob Schneider 53, Dermot Mulroney 53, Justin Chatwin 34, David Ogden Stiers 74, Nick Saben 65, Dan Rather 85, Willow Smith 16, Deidre Hall 69, Vanilla Ice 49, Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), Dale Evans (1912-2001), Michael Landon (1936-1991), John Candy (1950-1994), Barbra Bel Geddes (1922-2005).

It’s a sacrifice but…Pringles Potato Chip tubes make perfect baking give-away containers. If you start eating Pringles chips now, you can have as many containers as necessary by Christmas. Clean the tubes with a damp cloth. When wrapping the tubes, it may require a layer of white paper and then the final wrap to cover the original print. Place your cookies or candies inside and tie it all together with a fancy ribbon.

Thank you Connie Brumley Sutton (blogger) for this suggestion.

Halloween Wine Glasses

Materials Used: Dollar Store Wine Glasses, Glitter Blast Spray Paint HERE (Colors used, Citrus Dream, Diamond Dust, Orange Burst, Starry Night, Grape or Fierce Fuchsia) , Felt, craft foam for witch hat, Sharpie (black and red), Cheese Cloth or Similar material, Rafia, Hot glue and Hot glue gun, and Misc. embellishments.

Directions: Make sure your glasses are clean then simply spray them with the glitter spray and let dry for 24 hours. Once dry you can embellish them any way you want to, I used things I had around the house.

NOTE: When spraying these you must treat it like any spray paint, you need to do it in coats and spray at a slight distance, if you get to close or spay too much in one spot at a time then the paint/ glitter can run. Shake the can VERY well before spraying to mix the glitter, this also helps to keep the can from clogging. If you live in a cold/ damp climate you need to take caution when spraying it may not tack up if its too cold out (you can spray them in a garage or somewhere warmer to help, but be careful of over spray in this case).
NOTE: These are for decoration purpose only, not meant for actual food use.

THIS DAY IN BUSINESS: 1996 – AOL stops charging for time spent on the web, instead changes to a flat monthly rate, changing the web forever.

Baking Pans – Clean Baked On Grease

If you’re someone who uses their kitchen frequently, then you know how your baking sheets and pans get stained. There just doesn’t seem to be anything you can do about it, even if you scour it with a rough surface. Or is there?

Actually, if you want to clean your oven pans then you need to stop looking for kitchen objects to do the work. The secret actually lives in your laundry room. What is it? Dryer sheets!

Learn how to use dryer sheets to clean your dirty pans in a jiffy…

In order to use this cleaning trick, just following these simple instructions.
Place a dryer sheet in the middle of your dirty pan. Yes, a dryer sheet. Those things that soften your laundry. It doesn’t matter what brand of sheet you use. Any will work to degrease and clean your bakeware.

Now pour in warm water. Wash it directly over the dryer sheet in the middle and make sure it gets soaked. Do this step over the sink, if you think you’ll make a mess.

Now introduce some dish soap. Squeeze a liberal amount into the pan and make sure you get it everywhere. You don’t need to focus on any particular area of the pan. Just make sure you get it all over.
After you’ve followed all these steps, reach into the pan and start rubbing the dryer sheet all around the pan. Clean using a wiping motion with the sheet. Use the sheet as if it was a sponge and you were trying to remove the caked on grease – but don’t worry if it doesn’t come off yet, because you’re not done yet! You’re merely doing this step to make sure the soap gets up in all the nooks and crannies.

Wait one hour. After your timer goes off, remove the dryer sheet and dispose of it. Take a sponge and start wiping down your pan. The leftover food particles and caked on grease should come off very easily as you sponge at the junk. Now you’ll be left with a shiny clean baking pan!

Inexpensive Bathroom Makeover

Bathrooms tend to be one of the least decorated rooms in the home. If you love to travel or collect things, why not frame them and hang them in the bathroom. Use all the vertical space available and hang everything from small posters, to photos, to stretched fabrics. If you think you are an uninteresting photo taker, have a photo place turn your picture into black and white and crop it down to just a small section of the original, then put it in a great frame. Add or change your collage all the time. Your guests may never leave the bathroom.

How To Cook A Potato Faster

I have a ‘lazy blog’ for you today. The lazy part, being me.

This tip will help cook a microwave potato faster. Stick 4 toothpicks into one side of the potato to form legs. The suspended potato will cook much faster because the heat waves will reach the bottom as well as the sides. Don’t forget to poke a few holes in the potato with a fork to let the steam out. Cleaning up an exploded potato in the microwave is a subject for another blog.

If the power goes out while you’re gone on vacation or you are evacuated because of a storm, everything in your refrigerator and freezer from meat to milk will be at risk. But, if the power returns before you do, you’ll never know if your fridge was running the whole time or not.

For those of you who are leaving home for an extended period, I just heard a great tip. It’s called the one cup tip. You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it solid and then put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer. That way when you come back, you can tell if your food went completely bad and just refroze or if it stayed frozen while you were gone. If the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup that means all the food defrosted and you should throw it out. But if the quarter is either on the top or in the middle of the cup then your food may still be okay. It would also be a great idea to leave this in your freezer all the time and if you lose power for any reason you will have this tip to fall back on. If you don’t feel good about your food, just throw it out. The main thing is for all to be safe.

Make Super Cool Halloween Non-Treats

Fill clear plastic tubes with assorted black and orange beads, so kids can create their very own Halloween-inspired necklaces. Found this idea somewhere on the internet and it is a great substitute for sweet treats. I’m not certain if you can buy empty tubes but these particular ones are from used up glitter tubes. Wash them and remove any labels. Gather orange and black beads, a few fancy beads and put them in the tube. Cut lengths of plastic rope (available at craft shops) into bracelet or necklace lengths and wrap them around the tube. A small plastic sandwich bag tied up with the plastic rope at the top will do as well. Little girls will love this!

It’s getting to be that time of year again, where we start to think about Christmas. In the retail environment, it happens sooner. This week, at Charter House, we managed to get all the decorations hung on the wall, boxes of picks ready to be put into vases, table top decor waiting for the right setting and a game plan in place. We have staff with new ideas and a ‘let’s do it’ attitude.

UPCOMING EVENT: Now would be a good time to announce Charter House Interiors annual Christmas open house Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm. 98 COOL will be live on location in the morning time slot. There will be refreshments, door prizes and the staff dressed in our usual Christmas pajamas (and Ugly Christmas Sweaters) so you know who we are.
