Every year as we plan and decorate for Christmas in the store, we choose a theme, or color or direction we want the store to portray. This year, we have gone with the “Christmas Vacation” movie inspired theme for one of our collections. There is this fabulous door mat (with the tree on top of the station wagon) as well as tree ornaments, lit vases and dishes in the same pattern. Mark the date…Saturday, November 18 for our annual Christmas Open House. In-store specials, tax free, door prizes, meat trays, dainties, apple cider and more, all happening between 9:00 and 5:30.

How to Clean a Slow Cooker: 3 Easy Ways

How to Clean a Slow Cooker: 3 Easy Ways

Whether you are craving a heaping plate of pulled pork or a savory stew, if you’re like many home cooks, you agree the slow cooker is hands-down the most important kitchen gadget. Simply drop in the ingredients, turn on the cooker, and the whole family comes home to a scrumptious, savory supper. Best of all, you’re not stuck in the kitchen for hours at a time.

But do you know how to really clean it? We’re here to help with these three easy tricks.

Method 1: The Routine Clean
Your slow cooker may look clean, but if it’s the first time you’ve used it in a while, it doesn’t hurt to give it a scrub-down. After all, that black bean and pumpkin chili probably won’t pair well with dust mites. Simply fill the slow cooker insert with water, add a few drops of dish soap and turn it on for an hour. After 60 minutes, discard the soapy mixture and give the inside a quick rinse. Yes, it’s really that easy.

Method 2: When There are a Few Tough Stains
If bits of jambalaya are baked onto your slow cooker insert, this mission may call for reinforcements. Enter baking soda. If you haven’t gotten the memo, baking soda can do a lot more than make bread rise (here are 50 genius ways to clean with the stuff). You’ll want to follow the same steps mentioned above, but swap out the dish soap for baking soda. And for good measure, enlist a kitchen brush. Scrubbing the sides for a few minutes will help loosen those stubborn food particles.

Method 3. The Major Overhaul
Maybe you forgot to clean it right after dinner, or maybe you whipped up an incredibly thick and saucy dish, but one thing’s for sure: Your slow cooker is in need of a deep clean, stat. When you really need to get down to business, fill the cooker with water, baking soda and vinegar and then turn it on for an hour. Baking soda is a base while vinegar is an acid, so when the two are combined, they fizz up and can take on any tough stain. If you’re still not seeing the squeaky-clean results you hoped for, leave the slow cooker on for a few more hours and occasionally scrub the inside with a brush.

As for the outside, spot cleaning is the way to go. Wipe it down periodically with a damp microfiber cloth, and you’re all set.

DIY Hanging Succulent Planter

Hanging macrame planters have been ‘out’ for a few years now but this is a clean modern take on the old hanger. And, let’s face it, there is always a corner of your home that needs a bit of greenery without using up valuable table space. Use a dollar store bowl, embroidery hoop, and cord to create this trendy hanging succulent planter.

Grab your supplies and get ready to create your hanging succulent planter! First make sure your embroidery hoop and bowl fit. You want the hoop to come up under the lip of the bowl, but not be at risk for the bowl to slip through the hoop. You also want to avoid a bowl that is too big and doesn’t go far enough up the bowl. This will make your hanger unstable.

Next, decide how long you would like your planter to hang. Then cut three lengths of cord, adding on 3-inches to your hanging length for knots. Tie a secure knot on the end of each length of cord

Loosen the outer ring of the embroidery hoop and push through each of the knots, spreading them out around the hoop. Then tighten the tension of the outer hoop so that the knots cannot be pulled through between inner and outer hoops.

Plant your succulent, or whatever plant you choose, in your ceramic bowl. Clean up the edges and sides just in case any soil is lingering. Place bowl inside hoop. Lift up on your lengths of cords until they are taut. Gently lift your hoop and planter off the ground and create a knot that allows your plant to hang balanced. This took me two tries, but it’s really not too difficult.

Use an S-Hook or O-Ring to hold up your planter. Then hang it from a hook you may already have hanging, or you can use simple screw hooks mounted to suspend your planter.

Now sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor! This is a quick and easy way to bring some green life into any room!

Cleaning steps
1 To soften the waxy markings, blow-dry them on medium heat, holding a hair dryer about a foot from the wall. This will take approximately one minute. Once the wax has softened, use a credit card to gently scrape as much of it from the wall as you can. If the wax doesn’t come off easily, heat it further until it becomes more pliable.

2 Wipe the remaining wax off with a soft sponge dipped in cold water. Scrub in a circular motion until the wall is clean. To prevent the soiled water from dripping down and forming streaks, hold a rag against the wall beneath the area you’re working on. Wipe dry immediately with a clean cloth.

3 If any crayon residue remains, mix equal parts baking soda and water to create a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain in a circular motion using a sponge. Wash it off with a clean, wet sponge and dry immediately.

Extra tip: Walls get a lot of wear and tear from kids. To fill little dings and dents, rub a white bar of soap into them. Works for small nail holes, too!

Stylish solution: To stay a step ahead of your little Picasso, consider repainting your walls with a washable paint in a satin finish, which is more durable than a flat one.
