On Sunday May 12, 2013 city crews painted new traffic lanes down First Avenue and it is taking some getting used to by drivers. There is now a center yellow lane for left turns at intersections and into driveways for business access. Traffic is reduced from two lanes to one lane, going both north and south at 24th Street /1st Avenue and at 25th Street/1st Avenue. Motorists turning left off 25th Street onto 1st Avenue have to shift over to the curb and middle lanes now to accommodate the new center left turn lanes. This photo was taken from the 6th floor of Charter House where we have watched traffic patterns for almost a week. We did not see any information in the media for motorists to watch for these changes. There has been confusion, hesitation and near accidents. Once motorists get used to the changes, theoretically, it should run smoothly. It leaves us wondering what’ll happen when the lines are snow-covered in winter. Notice the new fence behind the Horizon building, there is now a huge parking lot where the Patricia Hotel and Sid’s Garage were. This eases some of the tight parking issues downtown.
