Keep A Penny Or Two To Counteract Bee Stings

This information may be something to remember, as this season will soon be here again. It might be wise to carry a penny in your pocket while working in the yard. BEE STINGS ! If you get stung by a bee or a hornet. Immediately tape a penny to the bite and within 15 minutes, the sting will be gone; and the next day there should be no more redness or lump. The copper in the penny counteracts the sting. Old wives tale? Maybe, but  you never know until you try. I suspect it works better on some people than others.

A Few Quick Tips On Art Placement

A number of years ago a friend gave us a great tip that to this day has made picture hanging a simple, pleasurable task. The tip was to always hang your art at 57″ on center. “On center” means that the middle of the picture is at 57″ (obviously, the hook will be higher). Interestingly, the 57″ standard represents the average human eye-height and is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums…

What WE have discovered is that if you stick to this standard, you create a harmony among ALL the pictures in your home, as they will always hang in relationship to one another from their centers, not their sides. Additionally, we have also found that this helps solve the problem many people have, which is that they hang their pictures too high.

Step By Step:

1. Measure and lightly mark 57″ on the wall
2. Measure top of your picture to the middle (or take height and divide by 2)
3. Measure top of your picture to the tightened wire (a small amount)
4. Subtract this last amount to tell you how far above 57″ your hook should go
5. Measure up from 57″ with this last amount and lightly mark on the wall

1. Picture is 20″ tall
2. Middle is 10″ down from top (this should rest at 57″)
3. Wire comes to 2″ below the top
4. 10″ – 2″ = 8″
5. Lightly mark 8″ above your first mark OR 65″ on the wall

Though this may seem complicated to read, it is quite simple when you do it. The thing to always remember is that the CENTER of all your pictures are hanging at the same 57″, and you are just figuring out where the hook goes above it.

This 57″ also applies to groups of pictures. Think of a group as ONE picture. After you arrange how you want them all to hang (doing this on the floor makes it easier), start with the center picture/pictures and get them at 57″ on center. Then surround them with the rest of the group. Do not stick to pictures alone…use plates, clocks, shadow boxes or whatever is interesting to you.

Who Needs A Restaurant When You Can Cook St. Louis Ribs At Home

Your friends will appreciate the effort if you make your own barbecue sauce. Take a basic recipe and make it your own by tweaking the ingredients. It doesn’t take a lot of time and the results are worth it.

St. Louis Barbecue is thinner and has more of a tangy flavor than its Kansas City cousin. For a less spicy sauce, cut down on the cayenne pepper.

Prep Time: 10 minutes    Cook Time: 20 minutes    Yield: About 3 1/2 cups

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over a low heat. Stirring occasionally and simmer for 20 minutes. Sauce should be thin, but not watery. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate. Sauce is better if allow to sit for a day.

Solar Lights Can Be Used As Emergency Lighting

With summer quickly approaching, so are summer thunderstorms and power outages. Solar lights glow for a long time so if the power goes off in the evening and continues into the night, gather up all your solar lights and use them indoors as night lights. Have one in the bathroom, kid’s room (they might not be so scared), kitchen and carry one from room to room. They can be stood up in trash cans, large plants or umbrella stands.

Dog Harnesses Tested Have A 100% Fail Rate

SAN CARLOS A first-of-its-kind crash test for dog harnesses widely used by pet owners showed that none offer adequate protection, with not a single harness passing the test.

The non-profit Center For Pet Safety (CPS) said during its harness tests, crash-test dog dummies turned into projectiles and were even decapitated.

“We tested them to the child safety restraint standard and we experienced a 100% failure rate to protect either the consumer or the dog,” said CPS founder and CEO Lindsey Wolko. “That is a very real concern for consumers.”

The Virginia-based CPS would not disclose which harnesses the nonprofit tested out of fear even fewer people will secure their pets.

Home Remedies For Sunburn, They Have Been Happening Already

Once a sunburn appears, it’s a good idea to cool the body off as soon as possible. Take a cool shower or soak in a tub of lukewarm water for around 10 minutes. This will lower the skin’s temperature and will help in the healing process. When you are done showering or soaking, try to air dry your skin or, if you need to use a towel, gently pat your skin dry as opposed to rubbing it. There are products out there that are made for sunburns but use with caution. Check the ingredients for lanolin. The product may feel cool and soothing at first but once it’s warmed by the body, the lanolin becomes heated by the body’s temperature and it can get very uncomfortable. Once applied, it can’t be taken off since it’s soaked into the skin.

Here are some homemade remedies: Bath Soaks If you choose to soak in a tub, it may help the healing process and cut down the itching if you were to use one of the following:

Baking Soda Bath: Fill a tub with mild water and add a cup of baking soda. Baking soda returns the skin’s pH to normal and acts as a great neutralizer. This bath will cool the skin down and allow for it to ‘breathe’ a bit, lowering the temperature naturally. You may want rinse off with clear water as, once dry, the baking soda may leave a light, white, powdery residue.

Oatmeal Bath: Similar to baking soda, oatmeal is a neutralizer and is awesome for sensitive and damaged skin.  You can just throw in a ½ cup or so in the tub while the water’s running or, to prevent clogging the drain, you may want to make an oatmeal ‘flour’ by running it through your blender or food processor. Sometimes, I’ll wrap it up in a cheese cloth and toss it in the bathtub.

Yogurt: Yes, yogurt! It contains enzymes and acids that can help the sunburn. It might be a bit unpleasant to begin with (a little squishy), but once you apply it, relief comes in minutes. You can either soak a cloth in yogurt, or simply apply it on the sunburn area. Leave it on until it’s dry (which happens soon after you placed it since the skin exerts high temperature). Rinse it off with cool water and repeat a couple times. You may want to add a couple drops of lavender essential oil which increases the soothing effect and diminishes the irritation and redness. And smells nice!

Aloe: This is the magical healing plant. Cut a leaf open and apply generously, it feels even better if refrigerated.

Quick And Easy Tips For Decorating Your Outdoor Space

1.) Create privacy and intimacy by growing trees, vines, hanging baskets and tall flowering plants. Make your own ‘walled courtyard garden room’, your neighbors will seem to disappear. 2.) If you have the space, build a multi-level deck with a food prep area, seating area and dining area. In other parts of the yard, provide small seating areas with a tete-a-tete or hanging swing or two chairs and a small table. 3.) Hang gauzy curtains off your porch or deck for more of a room-type feeling, just replace them every few years. 4.) Add mirrors…they can be  Garage Sale Chic and perked up with a coat of shiny bold exterior paint. Just be sure and hang them where the sun doesn’t reflect the rays and start a fire (from personal experience). 5.) Add an outdoor carpet. There are tons of gorgeous colors and patterns out there. A carpet helps define spaces on a flat deck or patio. It also keeps the heat off your feet. 6.) Add light, whether it is mini-lights in trees or a plug in light fixture (check all safety codes), there are some different patio lanterns out there as well. 7.) Go overboard with candles in hurricane vases, glass jars or lanterns. Line a walkway with them. 8.) Go bold with color and mix patterns. You are outside…make it colorful and happy with hot pink, sunny yellow, lime green and tangerine. Or make it like the seashore with white, earth-tones and shades of blue. 9.) Use super colorful and patterned dishes to add a vacation feel. Store them away for the winter, then they remain ‘special’. 10.) Ponds or fountains are a real soothing addition to and outdoor space, even very small features. They also help block out street noise.

Take A Trip Back In Time – Who Remembers Bonanza?

As kids, we wouldn’t miss an episode of Bonanza on Sunday nights. In its day, it was one of the most popular shows on the air. Looking back on it, the scenery was bad and every now and again you could see the microphone boom; yet the show captured a nation.

Bonanza was an NBC television western series, that aired from September 12, 1959 to January 16, 1973. The time period for the television series was somewhere between 1861 to 1867, during and shortly after the American Civil War. Lasting 14 seasons and 430 episodes and set on the fictitious Ponderosa Ranch, it ranks as the second longest running western series (behind Gunsmoke). The show chronicled the weekly adventures of the Cartwright family, headed by the three-time widowed patriarch Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene). He had three sons, each by a different wife: the eldest was Adam (Pernell Roberts); the second was the lovable giant  “Hoss” (Dan Blocker); and the youngest was “Little Joe” (Michael Landon). David Canary joined the cast after Pernell Roberts left. The family’s cook was Chinese immigrant Hop Sing (Victor Sen Young). Greene, Roberts, Blocker, and Landon were billed equally and the opening credits would alternate the order among the four stars.  Bonanza is still in syndication.

Ants Bugging You? 10 Easy Ways To Kill Ants Organically

10 Ways To Kill Ants… Organically

1. Baking soda is poisonous to ants, spinkle it around your plants to ensure ants will stay away.

2. Flour & Baby Powder will keep ants from reaching your plants, ants will not cross the powder – so circle your plants with it.

3. You can use coffee grounds, chili powder, cinnamon, peppermint or black pepper. All deter ants and if you pour coffee grounds directly on an anthill, they will eat the coffee grounds and implode.

4. Grits, instant rice & cream of wheat can be sprinkled around plants. The ant will eat a piece of whichever you sprinkle, drink water and the grain expands and kills the ant.

5. Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar and 1 part water and spray on plants. The acid in vinegar will kills ants.

6. Mix together one-third cup of molasses, six tablespoons of sugar, and six tablespoons of active dry yeast into a smooth paste. Use the mixture to coat strips of cardboard. Keep out of reach of pets and small children. You can leave mixture on a saucer outside anthill and they’ll eat it and die!

7. Fold contact paper in half, with the sticky side out and make a circle around base of plant. The ants get stuck on the paper – problem solved.

8. Cut off the bottom of a paper cup and cut a slit up the side of the cup and coat outside with vaseline and place around base of plant. You can also use packing tape.

9. Mix one cup of borax, two-thirds a cup sugar and one cup water. Dip cotton balls in the solution and place in areas near your anthill Ants will leave the plants alone and ingest the sweet mixture. The borax kills the ants.

10. Dichotomous Earth is a commonly sold organic pesticide that will destroy the insects outer skeletons, causing the pests to die from dehydration.
