Canada’s Titanic: Empress of Ireland Tragedy Remembered 100 Years Later

This article appeared on Saskatoon Homepage this morning and makes for an interesting read. Most people have no knowledge of this tragedy which happened 100 years ago today.

A tragic sinking leaving over a thousand dead, lost and overlooked by history, Genevieve Beauchemin reports on a call to remember.

The Empress of Ireland disaster is what some call Canada’s forgotten tragedy, but 100 years later, people are remembering.

More than 1,000 people perished on this day exactly 100 years ago, in a tragic tale of two ships doomed on the Saint Lawrence River.

It took only 14 minutes for ocean liner Empress of Ireland, often referred to as “Canada’s Titanic,” to sink in the early morning hours of May 29, 1914.

The Empress of Ireland is shown in an undated photo provided by Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père. The Canadian Pacific steamship, the Empress of Ireland, collided on May 29, 1914 with a Norwegian freighter near Quebec, sinking in 14 minutes and killing 1,012 people. The Empress and its legacy has been left behind, some say, because it exists only in the shadows of the Titanic catastrophe that took place in 1912, two years prior.

“It was sort of blotted out from history by two things,” Dr. John Willis, a curator at the Canadian Museum of History, said in an interview on CTV’s Power Play.

“One, the memory of the Titanic itself. It was a big American and English memory… WWI sort of rubbed it out, and yet that’s a terrible irony because this is Canada’s greatest maritime disaster in its entire history.”

The Empress of Ireland, which was headed for Liverpool after departing from Quebec City the previous day, was travelling along the Saint Lawrence River when it encountered heavy fog. Approaching the ocean liner was Norwegian collier Storstad, a coal ship.

“There was a terrible comedy of errors, misunderstandings, and the collier ripped into the side of the empress,” Willis said.

Roughly 300 people survived the wreck. There were 138 children on board, but only five survived.

“The water was at four degrees, it was the middle of the night, everyone was sleeping,” said Alberic Gallant, from the maritime museum.

Rescue efforts were nearly impossible because of how rapidly water rushed into the vessel.

“Our ship went down in 14 minutes,” Willis said. “So there was no time to process rescuing from aboard the ship in the case of the Empress. It was really a terrible disaster.”

The wreckage lies 40 metres below the surface near the town of Rimouski, Que.

The Point-au-Pere Maritime Historic Site organized a number of events this week to mark the anniversary of the sinking.

Michael Ross Bullock travelled to Quebec from England to make sure his great uncle Thomas, who died on the Empress, is not forgotten.

“I wanted to come over, just to really remember him,” he said. “He is literally out (in the water).”

The underwater archeology team of Parks Canada will perform two expeditions this summer as part of the 100-year commemoration, Willis said.

Rain Gutter Book Shelves

This is a home made rain gutter book shelves don’t look like I anticipated they would.  They look 10X better.  Depending on how high you install them, they can take on the appearance of a chair rail, can be used to keep things out of the reach of inquisitive younger siblings, or make an attractive shelf that can hold a multitude of things. The gutters can be cut to size, they can be painted just about any color, and are super easy to install.  Please check out the pictures. You are going to need:

vinyl gutters (they come in 10 foot sections).
mounting brackets
end caps
screw driver or drill
measuring tape

Using a laser level will make things easier.

This is so easy, almost anyone can do this.

First:  Plan out how long your shelves are going to be.

Second: Decide how many brackets you will need. Use one gutter bracket for every 24 inches give or take a few inches. Try to space them evenly for the length of gutter you are going to hang.

Third: Calculate how many end caps you will need.  You will need a left end cap and a right end cap for every shelf you plan on hanging. To save on cost, eliminate the caps in the kids rooms . You can always go back and add them later.

Fourth: Start hanging gutters. Drill into the studs if you know they are going to add many books.

Baby-On-A-Budget Floral Stenciled Dresser

If you are expecting a new addition to the family soon and want to do have the whole “baby room” experience, here is a low cost way to get some of the furniture to make this happen. The dresser can be re-done as the child ages or makes a great garage sale item. Some sand paper and a couple of weekends work and you can step back and admire your pride-of-accomplishment project.

Nondescript wood dressers can often be found for rock-bottom prices at garage sales. To give them a dose of character and contemporary styling, cover the top in color and embellish the fronts with stencils. Removing drawers in favor of lined and labeled baskets is another easy way to add color and charm.

6 Tips to Organize a Successful Yard Sale

It’s that warm time of year and for those of you who have done your spring cleaning for the month and are stuck with piles of bags and boxes of items that you no longer need, here are six tips from Professional Organizers in Canada on how to organize a yard sale:

1. Advertise – Put out a free advertisement on craigslist one week before and create 8.5 X 11 flyers to distribute within a 2 block radius around your home. You can also create an event on social media sites one month before and take pictures of all the different items that you will be selling to entice some buyers in advance!

2. Make it a street party! Get other neighbours on the street involved so you can advertise a giant block clothing sale. Hold a casual meeting one month before so you can delegate individual tasks for promoting the event and don’t forget to get all the kids involved! They can be in charge of setting up and organizing a lemonade stand at the event with proceeds going to the charity of their choice.

3. Rain Day – Make sure you’ve chosen another Saturday or Sunday as a back-up rain day and ensure you announce any cancelations on all necessary locations such as social media pages and craigslist. Keep in mind that it might still rain on your yard sale day so keep some plastic bags and tarps ready to cover your items in a hurry.

4. Prep Everything – Have everything ready the night before so you are just putting things out the day of the sale. This is a good time to double check on quality — make sure the items you plan to sell are in good condition and clothes have no holes, stains or rips in them. You can consider inviting some friends over and make it a social event — provide them with some refreshments in exchange for their help setting up.

5. Set it up like a store – Display your best items up front in order to grab the attention of individuals walking buy. Then group like items together and create garment racks or a self-made clothesline – tree branches work too! Try to keep items to one layer so people don’t have to go rummaging through bins and boxes and can see everything at a glance. Put out a bookshelf for shoes, boots, purses and sunglasses and don’t forget to colour block. Lastly, turn up the tunes! A good store always has a great playlist in the background.

6. Price it right – Put stickers on hard items or coloured dots (with an easy legend) to save time having to write everything out. This way if you want to slash prices throughout the day you can just update the legend rather than have to adjust prices on each item. Remember to leave some haggle room too! For popular or pricey items you can tape a copy of an advertisement to the item so they can see the value.

* Put on a fanny pack with change inside and be prepared for some friendly bartering.

You can arrange to have any items that did not sell donated to charity and in some cases they will come and pickup the items right from your door so nothing is going back inside the house! Just make sure you organize this before hand.

Most importantly, do your best to have fun and the more organized you are, the more fun it will be.

New Use For Orphaned Socks

What an absolutely AWESOME idea!!!!If you run out of sheets for your wet/dry mop (think Swiffer), just dampen an inside-out sock with your favorite cleaning solution, stretch it around the mop head and use as you normally would. The cotton sock will effectively pick up dust and dirt, leaving your floors spotless. Bonus: When you’re finished cleaning, you can just toss the sock in the wash and reuse.

DIY Outdoor Bar Made From Pallets

Couple of recycled pallets painted white, topped with a couple of cement stepping stones, makes a nice outdoor shelf, bar, garden work table, lots of possibilities! Where white is crisp and clean, don’t be afraid to try out bright colors as well. Great for a small patio !! Make sure your pallet bar is firmly anchored, the weight of it falling on anyone would cause serious injuries. Build shelves into the spaces and you have storage for wine glasses and potting supplies.
