Tips On How To Arrange Furniture On A Rug

One of the most frequently asked questions would be,”How do I arrange a furniture on a rug and what size do I buy?” This is a quick guideline to help. Before you select an area rug, layout your furniture as to how you want it in the room. This will help you see the relationship of the furniture to the room, to any other furniture pieces and to the size and shape of the rug you are going to need. If it is an awkward space such as long and narrow, you can purchase a long narrow rug and place the front feet of the sofa on the rug and two chairs opposite the sofa with all four feet on the rug. It is perfectly acceptable.
There are basically three ways you can arrange living room furniture on your rug.
All on: The rug is large enough to place all of the furniture legs on top of it. This creates a more luxurious feel. For this, bigger is better. Just be sure to leave at least 12 to 18 inches of floor surface on all four sides of the rug’s borders.

All off: If you have a small room, keeping all legs off the rug is a great cost-effective choice. You don’t want to pick too small a rug, though, or it may look insignificant, like an afterthought. The rug should appear as though it could touch the front legs of each of the seating pieces. This approach is best suited when you’re layering a pattern over a larger solid or textured rug.

Front on: Put just the front feet of all your seating pieces on the rug to tie the arrangement together visually and create a well-defined space while lending a feeling of openness.
A general rule for dining room rugs: extend the rug 24 inches around a table. It is much easier to maneuver dining chairs if there is at least 24 inches of rug extending from the edge of the table on all sides. This rule allows the back legs of the chairs to be on the rug, even when being used. This can be a hard design goal to achieve due to the typical proportion of tables to area rugs.

Relieve A Sunburn With Tea

You’ll Need:
A Large Bowl
Earl Grey Tea Bags

Place 5-7 early grey tea bags in your coffee pot filter holder and then run a pot of water through your coffeepot. Once it’s done brewing, transfer the tea into a large bowl and add the teabags that you used to brew the pot of tea. This does not work with plain tea, it only seems to work well with Earl Grey tea.

Let it cool to room temperature. Soak a clean towel in the bowl of room temperature Early Grey tea. Wring it out gently and apply it to directly to the burned area for a minimum of 30 minutes. Do not use sprays, aloe or any other “treatment”. This tea MUST be applied within 6-8 hours of the initial burn to be most effective. It will immediately relieve pain. By the next morning, it will look like the photo of this person’s back does here in the 4th photo. Pain is gone, tan remains.

Make Your Own Artist Palette Plant Pot Stands

This DIY project was found on the internet but did not come with dimensions or instructions but almost any handyman could figure this out and do a good job building it. It appears to be about 4′ in diameter with enough holes to plant a flower pot in a different color of the rainbow with a hole or two left over for garden tools. For a long life, use pressure treated wood and a good outdoor paint. Who knows, you might even make a bit of money selling these artist palette plant pot stands. If not, it will brighten up a corner of your yard.

Grilled Corn with Smoky Lime Butter

Grilled Corn with Smoky Lime Butter

8 ears fresh sweet corn with husks (if grilling, soak corn in water for 1/2 – 1 hour  beforehand)

Smoky Lime Butter

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 lime
2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro or parsley
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

  1. Heat a charcoal or gas grill to medium-high. Grill corn 20 minutes, turning every 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, for Smoky Lime Butter, in a small bowl combine butter, zest from half the lime, and juice of whole lime. Stir in cilantro, salt, smoked paprika, and pepper. Transfer butter mixture to a serving bowl.

From the Test Kitchen

For More Char:

Try this for even more char and grilled flavor. A few minutes before serving, peel back corn husks and remove silks. Brush with some of the Smoky Lime Butter. Return to grill and grill 5 minutes more or until lightly browned, turning once or twice.

To keep grilled corn warm, cover with foil and let stand up to 20 minutes. Store prepared Smoky Lime Butter, covered, in refrigerator up to 1 week. Let stand at room temperature 1 hour before serving.

Keep Slugs And Grubs Out Of Your Garden With This Simple Trick

Are you plagued with slugs and grubs in the garden? Try this simple trick to rid yourselves of the pests. You can use tart tins strategically placed where the pests are the worst.
Place a few cucumber slices in a small aluminum pie tin around your garden and you will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.
