Stack Pumpkins – Easy Way To Dress Up Your Front Entrance

Create a pumpkin stack using a footed pot, dry sphagnum moss, and three pumpkins in your favorite colors and in graduated sizes. Use moss to level the pumpkins as you stack them, trimming stems, if necessary. Use urns or large plant pots left over from summer. Paint out your pumpkins for a different look. For very little cost and almost no effort, you can have a stunning front entrance.

Make Your Own Taco Seasoning

Thank you Connie Brumley Sutton (blogger) for this.

Rachel Ray talked about how you should make your own taco seasoning because the stuff you buy in stores is full of sodium(and it has silica in it, which is like the little packet found in new shoes that says DO NOT EAT!). This is just full of flavor. Simply spices!

1 T chili powder
1 T ground cumin
1 T garlic powder……
1 T onion powder
1/4 T crushed red pepper
Mix in a small bowl.

Add to cooked hamburger along with 3/4 cup water. Simmer for 5-10 minutes

9 Biggest Mistakes You Make With Your Freezer

Freezing food is an essential, easy kitchen function — but it’s not quite foolproof. Next time you think “Oh, I’ll just toss this in the freezer,” remember these missteps.

Sharon Franke is the director of the Kitchen Appliances and Technology lab of the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. Thanks to her for this blog.

Zero degrees (or even lower) is the best temp for long-term frozen food storage, so set your freezer as low as it will go. And if you find that your ice cream gets too hard to scoop, store it on the door where the temperature will be the highest.

A full freezer retains cold better than an empty one. When you open the door, the mass of frozen food will help keep in the cold, and the unit won’t have to work as hard to cool empty space. But don’t jam pack the freezer either; you need air to circulate.

Whether you use zipper-top freezer bags, aluminum foil, or heavy-duty plastic wrap, make sure to remove air by smoothing the wrap around the food. If you’re freezing in storage containers, fill them almost to the top to protect leftovers from freezer burn (but give food enough room to expand as it freezes). And when you don’t cook all the items in the package (like frozen waffles, hot dogs, or chicken nuggets), toss what’s left into a tightly sealed bag or container.
Even foods that are frozen will eventually deteriorate in taste and texture, so write dates on bags and containers (check foodsafety.gov for how long certain items will last in the freezer). Consider rotating items so the oldest ones are always in the front, and they’ll be the first that you grab.

A store-bought bin is a great way to corral small or oddly-shaped items, like bags of fruit, bagels, and Parmesan rinds.

Place small items like strawberries, hamburgers, and cookies on a baking sheet and let them harden before tossing them into a bag or container. Then, they won’t freeze together, and it will easier to grab just one at time.

While freezing will preserve food, it won’t restore its freshness. Chopped meat that was ground the day you froze it will taste fresher than meat that was frozen when it was several days old. Likewise, muffins that are frozen right after they’re baked will taste better than older ones.

If you thaw meats, poultry, and seafood on the countertop, bacteria may grow on their surfaces before they’re fully defrosted. Thaw in the fridge or microwave instead.

When the power goes out, keep the freezer closed to keep food frozen as long as possible. Anything that’s still frozen when the power comes back on can remain in the freezer. Any items that are defrosted (but still icy cold) should be prepared and eaten promptly. When in doubt, toss!

JOKE OF THE DAY: I’m a multi-tasking procrastinator. I can put off all kinds of things at once.

WORDS TO LIVE BY: I used to hope that you’d bring me flowers. Now I plant my own.

Potato Facts And A Bonus Recipe

Do you love potatoes? Do avoid potatoes? Here are some POTATO FACTS we believe everyone should be aware of.

Potatoes are powerhouses of nutrients and clean calories. A medium-size potato has 40% of required daily value of vitamin C, more potassium (>600mg) than a banana, 4 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber with no fat and zero cholesterol. They are one of the nature’s perfect foods. They get the unnecessary bad reputation because of the added fats (oils, butter, cheese and sour cream) that are typically used in cooking them.

Whole potatoes are healthful, but not the potatoes slathered in oil, butter, cheese and sour cream

(ALOO GOBI) (Recipe from Dr.Barnard’s Cancer survivors guide)

1 cup water, as needed
1 onion, diced or thinly sliced
3 to 4 cups cauliflower florets
2 medium potatoes, peeled (if desired) and diced
½ teaspoon whole cumin seeds
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
½ teaspoon ground coriander
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ to ¼ teaspoon cayenne
1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained, or
1 ½ cups chopped fresh tomatoes
½ teaspoon salt

1. Heat ½ cup of the water in large pot. Add the onion and cook and stir over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes,
until the onion begins to soften. Lower the heat to medium and add the cauliflower and potatoes. Continue cooking, stirring often, for about 5 minutes. Add more of the water, ¼ cup at a time, as needed to prevent sticking.
2. Toast the cumin seeds, turmeric, coriander, ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne in a dry skillet over medium heat for two minutes, stirring constantly. Add the spices to cauliflower mixture along with the tomatoes and their juice, and salt and stir to mix. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
3. Stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, leftover Potato and Cauliflower Curry will keep for up to 3
For a sweeter curry, add ½ cup of golden raisins along with the tomatoes.

How To Find A Lost Dog

Found this on the internet. It may just help someday if a beloved pet goes missing.

On day 12 of searching for my dog in a heavily wooded area, distraught and hopeless, I ran into a couple of hunters. They said they lost the occasional dog on a hunt but always got them back. What they told me has helped reunite many dogs with their families.

The dog owners should take an article of clothing that has been worn for at least all day, the longer the better, so the dog can pick up the scent. Bring the article of clothing to the spot where the dog was last seen and leave it there. Also, if the dog has a a crate and familiar toy, bring those too (unless location undesirable for crate).  You might also leave a note requesting article of clothing not be moved (and leave a phone # and photo of the dog in case anyone finds him/her).

Leave a bowl of water there, as the dog probably hasn’t had access to any. Do not bring food as this could attract other animals the dog might avoid. Come back the next day or check intermittently if possible, hopefully the dog will be waiting there. I was skeptical and doubted my dog would be able to detect an article of clothing if he didn’t hear me calling his name as loudly as possible all day for 12 days. But I returned the next day and found him sitting there.

I hope this helps someone who is missing their best fur friend.

JOKE OF THE DAY: That awkward moment when a Zombie is looking for brains and it walks right past you.

TIP OF THE DAY: FOR KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS…find a teapot that goes with the decor of your house. Put a rolled up ball of wool in the teapot and feed the loose yarn end through the spout. This will keep the yarn from tangling and prevent kitty from playing with it. The teapot makes a nice decor element for an end table as well as holding yarn.

Turn Outdated Tealight Holders Into A Birdfeeder

Here is a way to re-purpose those tealight candle holders you have hanging around collecting dust. The birds like it… and it’s prettier than most other feeders and easier to fill. It also gives the little guys somewhere to perch.

Quick Tip On Keeping Bread Fresh

No real blog today, just a tip on keeping bread fresh. We’ve all have bread dry out (mainly because someone has left the bag open), so we either chuck it or save it for turkey stuffing. I have not tried this but it seems like it could work.
