Why Do We Have Leap Years

A leap year, where an extra day is added to the end of February every four years, is down to the solar system’s disparity with the Gregorian calendar.
A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So leap seconds – and leap years – are added as means of keeping our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons. If we didn’t do this, the seasons would shift around the calendar, and in 750 years’ time June would find itself in the middle of winter.
Why does the extra day fall in February?
All the other months in the Julian calendar have 30 or 31 days, but February lost out to the ego of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. Under his predecessor Julius Caesar, February had 30 days and the month named after him – July – had 31. August had only 29 days. When Caesar Augustus became Emperor he added two days to ‘his’ month to make August the same as July. So February lost out to August in the battle of the extra days.

Meet Michelle Glay…A Talented Artist

**Editor’s Note** When in Toronto in January for the TORONTO GIFT FAIR, I had the pleasure of meeting Michelle Glay, one of Renwil’s in-house artists. Michelle is one of the newer artists at Renwil and takes a back seat to no one with some very different art ideas. In this photo, Michelle is working on a very detailed piece of art. She was in Renwil’s on-site showroom every day, meeting people and painting something new. In the background is some of her 3D pieces. A delightful lady and we are happy to carry some of her work in our store. To see more of Michelle, go to: www.michelleglay.com. or www.renwil.com.

Renwil has been in the business of art since 1967 and has been one of Charter House Interiors major art suppliers for years.

Michelle Glay is a Montreal based designer and digital artist. She developed an appreciation for art which was cemented during a childhood trip to Paris. After receiving degrees in philosophy and graphic design from Concordia University, Michelle’s creativity and passion for design led her to a career in fashion and home décor.

What Causes Meat and Poultry to Change Color

What Causes Meat and Poultry to Change Color?

From red meat to poultry, here’s why meat can change color and what it means.

Red Meat

Appearance no doubt plays a big part in what we think of as fresh, and in the case of red meat, you probably equate a bright-red color with freshness. This color is a result of the protein in meat called myoglobin, which turns into oxymyoglobin and produces a vivid red color when it comes into contact with oxygen.

Not all red meats are the same color, though — color is influenced by factors like diet, sex, exercise, species, and especially age, which can produce darker-colored meat.

Prolonged exposure to air and light will also darken meat that starts out bright red, as you’ve probably seen when pre-formed hamburger patties start to turn gray, but are still red or pink inside. Color changes can also occur if raw meat is frozen, where it can fade or darken in color.

5 Places You Don’t Think to Clean Before Showing Your Home

When you’re selling a home, the elbow grease you put into keeping it clean and neat can come with an added bonus: a quicker sale.

Even though most homeowners wouldn’t dream of leaving dirty dishes in the kitchen sink or clothes on the bathroom floor when potential buyers will be coming by, there are five areas of the home that often get overlooked.

1. The garage. To make your garage show well, get rid of everything you don’t need and organize the rest. Hang your tools neatly on a pegboard, arrange paint cans on shelves and suspend holiday decorations from racks attached to the ceiling. This helps the space shout “storage solutions!” to buyers who crave them. Give the space a thorough cleaning, and you’re ready to throw open the doors and entice garage-hungry buyers.

2. The backyard. Don’t miss the opportunity to wow buyers who want an eye-catching, outdoor living space. Clean the barbecue and set the patio table for guests. If you have a hot tub, run it and leave the top off to allow guests to picture themselves taking a long, hot soak. If you do nothing else, give your backyard a thorough cleaning. Hose down the patio, mow the lawn, rake the leaves, replace dead plants and pick up pet droppings.

3. The closets, cupboards and drawers. If you could be a fly on the wall during an open house, you’d be amazed at the number of people who open drawers and cupboards. Sure, some of them are just being nosy, but others want to see how much space they offer. Remove as many items as possible from closets, cupboards and drawers. Invest in shoe racks to keep the closet floors clutter-free. Use drawer dividers to separate items as needed. Clean your cupboard shelf surfaces, especially those in the kitchen, to remove dust and food residue. Fold linens and towels and stack them neatly in the linen closet.

4. The laundry room. Soapy shelves, dryer sheets littering the floor and piles of dirty laundry on top of the dryer are all signs of a well-used laundry room. Unfortunately, these are turnoffs for buyers. Store the detergent and other cleaning supplies in bins or baskets lined up neatly on the shelf. Clean lint and dust off the walls and wash down the washer and dryer.

5. The appliances. Most owners shine up the fronts of their appliances before listing their homes, but they forget about the interiors. Whether appliances are included in the sale or not, folks will open them to take a peek inside. If anything inside of your refrigerator looks more like a science project than yummy leftovers, throw it away. Wipe down the walls and clean the produce bins. Come to think of it, don’t forget the top of the refrigerator, too. A lot of dust can collect up there. Give the stove and oven the same treatment, wiping off accumulated grease and baked-on food.

House hunters know the minute they walk in the door if they want to see more of the home. If they feel like they should be wearing a hazmat suit, they won’t stick around. A clean house gets them excited about taking a tour and possibly making an offer.

Hard-Boiled Eggs…Baked

For anyone who may not know, the best way to make “hard-boiled” eggs is in the oven! Place eggs in a muffin tin so they don’t roll around, turn the oven to 325 degrees, and bake for 25-30 min. That’s it! Not only are they tastier, but they are also much easier to peel.

Restaurant-Style French Toast

Restaurant-Style French Toast

4 eggs
2/3 cup whole milk
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
6 slices Texas toast thick bread
3 tablespoons butter
powdered sugar

Mix together the eggs, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla, salt& cinnamon.
Heat a large skillet, or griddle.
When the skillet is hot, add 1 tablespoon butter.
If the butter smokes, your pan is too hot; turn down the heat.
Dip each slice of bread into the batter for 30 seconds on each side.
Let some of the batter drip off, then put in skillet.
Cook each slice 1 1/2-2 minutes per side until each side is golden brown.
Add more butter, if necessary, to cook all of the slices.
To serve, put on plate, dust with powdered sugar. Serve with butter & hot syrup.

**Editors Note** This recipe was sent to me in one of those recipe sharing email things. I haven’t tried it yet but it has to be better than any French Toast recipe I have tried so far.

Remove Mascara Stains From Clothing

Most women know that stubborn can be a pain to remove. It usually takes a pretty powerful makeup remover and a lot of elbow grease to scrub mascara off your lashes. If you can barely remove mascara from your face, you would think a big, greasy mascara smear would be a death sentence for your favorite top. Luckily, there’s an easy trick to reviving mascara-stained fabrics. The best part? The secret ingredient is probably hiding under your kitchen sink.

Without getting too scientific, mascara consists mainly of pigment, wax and oil. Since mascara is grease-based, all you need is a grease-fighting soap like Dawn or Palmolive (even Pine Sol will work).

Dab a little bit of dish soap on to the mascara stain.

Rub the dish soap into the stain and scrub under warm water. This should get most of the stain out of the fabric.

To make sure the stain is completely removed, throw the garment into the washing machine. If you want to be extra cautious, you can treat the spot with a stain-removing spray.

Be sure the stain is completely removed before putting the garment into the dryer (drying can cause the stain to set). The mascara should come off with this technique and your clothing should be as good as new!
