Some downtown Saskatoon streets will be closed for celebrations on New Year’s Eve. (Submitted by Kelly Pankratz)

With New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday, reductions to some city services in Saskatoon will continue through Jan. 2.

City Hall, the impound lot and all library locations will be closed both days.

The landfill will be open its regular hours, and garbage and recycling will be picked up as usual.

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo will be open.

The Cosmo Civic Centre and the Terry Fox track will be closed, but the Saskatoon Field House, Lakewood Civic Centre, Lawson Civic Centre, Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre and Shaw Centre will be open. All fitness classes, though, are cancelled.

Ding in the new year. Transit will run on its regular Sunday schedule on both Sunday and Monday.

For New Year’s Eve on Saturday, transit service will be free thanks to a partnership between Saskatoon Transit and SGI.

Free rides begin at 5 p.m. CST and continue until 2:45 a.m. Sunday to give people choosing to imbibe in celebrations a safe way to get around the city.

In years past, free New Year’s Eve transit began at 8 p.m. This year, it’s beginning earlier to give people going to YXE-NYE-150 a ride.

The celebration, held at Kiwanis Memorial Park, celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation and includes a fireworks finale from the Broadway Bridge. The bridge, meanwhile, will be closed to vehicle traffic from 5 to 9 p.m. Spadina Crescent will also be closed from 22nd Street to 24th Street from 3 to 9:30 p.m.

JOKE OF THE DAY: For my New Year’s resolution, I promise to stop correcting your terrible spelling and focus more on your horrific grammar.

THE LAST SAD DAY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IN 2016: The final passing in 2016 was MASH star William Christopher who played Father John Mulcahy on the iconic show.

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork- Easy Anytime Meal

A day filled with work, after-school activities and chores around the house may make hitting the drive-thru feel like the easiest solution to your dinner woes. However, if you have a slow cooker you can serve your family a delicious, homemade meal without spending hours in the kitchen.
Slow cooker pulled pork

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 8 hours, 5 minutes
Serves: 6-8
1- 4 to 5-lb. pork shoulder (it may also be labeled as Boston butt)
2 medium yellow onions, sliced
4 garlic cloves, sliced
1 cup of chicken stock or chicken broth
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
1 12-oz bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce (optional)
1. Into the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker, add the sliced onion, sliced garlic and chicken broth.
2. In a small bowl, mix together all spices: brown sugar, chili powder, salt, cumin, paprika, cinnamon and pepper.
3. Pat the pork shoulder dry using paper towels, then rub the seasoning mix coating all sides. Place the shoulder in the slow cooker, cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until the meat is very tender.
4. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred with two forks, removing any bone or large chunks of fat. Strain the onions from the slow cooker, and set the juices aside. Mix onions and shredded pork together.
5. If serving the pulled pork for tacos or to eat on its own, slowly add a few tablespoons of the removed juices at a time until the meat is juicy and moist. Alternatively, add in a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce. Stir well and serve on a toasted bun for a fantastic pulled pork sandwich.
Pro tip: When selecting your cut of pork shoulder, look for one with plenty of marbling. Don’t opt for a lean cut or trim away the fat before cooking.
Pro tip: This recipe freezes well, so you can stock it away for quick meals later in the week.

Top Dog Names In 2016

Dog names ride waves of popularity just like names for people. It will sometimes depend on movies or television shows that are popular at the time. These are the top 10 names for both male and female dogs in 2016 and some tips in naming your new pet.

Top 10 Male Dogs Names: Max, Charlie, Buddy, Cooper, Jack, Rocky, Bear, Duke, Toby, Tucker
Top 10 Female Dog Names: Bella, Lucy, Daisy, Lola, Luna, Molly, Sadie, Sophie, Bailey, Maggie

As the saying goes, ‘a dog is a man’s best friend.’ And a best friend deserves a truly suitable name. However, coming up with your furbaby’s name may actually be harder than you think.

  1. Stick with shorter names. Dogs have an easier time recognizing names that are one or two syllables long, compared to names that are more complex. If you do give your dog a longer, more formal name, know that you will ultimately end up shortening it (also, nicknames are common).
    2. Try out names sharp consonants. Dogs hear high frequency sounds very well, so names starting with s, sh, ch, k, etc. work well when catching a dog’s attention. Dogs will respond more quickly to sharp sounds. At the same time, consider names that end with a vowel, particularly a short ‘a’ or a long ‘e’ sound.
    3. Do not pick a name that sounds similar to a command. Because dogs do not particularly recognize the actual word, but instead understand the frequency of the word, they can get confused by words that sound too similar–particularly when one of those words is a command that they are supposed to follow. “Kit” can be confused with “sit”. “Bo” could be confused with “no”.
    4. Stick with similar sounds if you are renaming an older dog. Be careful when changing an older dog’s name. It’s more important to keep the vowel sounds the same than the consonants, since vowels are easier for the dog to pick up on and what the dog is actually listening for. So “Sadie” will accept “Grady”.
    5. Remember that you’ll be using your dog’s name in public. Choosing a name that’s too common will mean your dog might run to someone else (or you might get someone else’s dog jumping on you) at the vet or dog park. You should also consider the sort of reaction that the name you give your dog might inspire. For instance, people will probably be a little more wary of a dog named “Killer” than a dog named “Tiny”.
    6. Ask before using a family member or friend’s name. They might think of it less as a compliment and more as disrespect.
    7. Try the name out for a couple of days before you make it permanent. See if it grows on you. You’ll know soon enough whether it’s a keeper or not. Don’t forget to reward your puppy or dog when they respond to their new name. Pay attention to how it feels to say your pup’s potential name. Could you see yourself using that name over and over again? If your answer is meh, choose a different name. ***On a personal note*** We adopted a 1 1/2 year old dog (pictured here) from the SPCA in December 2015 and they had named him “Pongo”. He had been dumped in a ditch so no one knows what his original name had been. He seemed to answer to anything ending with a ‘Y’ so we went through Bobby, Buddy and an assortment of others. Nothing felt right. He has a wrench shaped scar on his nose so we called him “Wrench” for a couple of days but that didn’t feel right either. Then four of us were sitting around one day and quoting lines from the movie ‘Christmas Vacation’ and said the line: “Take you out in the middle of nowhere…leave you for dead.” (which is what someone did to this poor dog) and three of us said, “GRIZ”. Let’s name him Griz after Clark Griswald. Because it was so close to Christmas that we adopted him, it was perfect. He took to his new name straight away and the rest is history.
    8. Explore many names. If you are really struggling on what you should name your dog, and need a little help, you can always run an internet search for a list of dog names. Or…enlist friends and family. They may say he looks like a ‘Jack’ or she looks like a ‘Chloe’ and there you will have the perfect name for your new puppy. Some of these same tips could be applied to a cat as well.

Asian Broccoli and Beef
Who doesn’t love to come home to a ready-to-eat; and added bonus of being a home cooked meal. This is a slow cooker meal that was rated 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Asian Broccoli and Beef

2 1/4 pounds boneless beef chuck roast
1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil (optional)
3 cups broccoli florets
2 tablespoons cold water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon orange marmalade or 1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel
1/3 cup dry roasted cashews, coarsely chopped
3 cups hot cooked cellophane noodles or black rice
Snipped fresh cilantro (optional)
  1. Trim fat from meat. Cut meat into 2-inch pieces. Place meat in a 4-quart slow cooker. In a small bowl combine soy sauce, 3 tablespoons of the orange juice, the ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper. Pour mixture over meat in cooker.
  2. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 8 to 10 hours or on high-heat setting for 4 to 5 hours. If desired, stir in sesame oil. If using low-heat setting, turn to high-heat setting. Add broccoli to cooker. Cover and cook about 15 minutes more or just until broccoli is tender.
  3. Using a slotted spoon, transfer meat to a medium bowl. Using two forks, break meat into smaller pieces. Add broccoli to meat in bowl; cover and keep warm.
  4. For sauce, strain cooking liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a small saucepan. In a small bowl stir the water into cornstarch; stir into strained cooking liquid. Cook and stir over medium heat until slightly thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Remove from heat. Stir in orange marmalade and the remaining 1 tablespoon orange juice.
  5. Add cashews and about half of the sauce to meat mixture; toss gently to coat. Serve over hot cooked noodles. If desired, sprinkle with cilantro. Pass the remaining sauce.

Candy Sleighs- Make Them Yourself For A Sweet Treat

Candy Sleighs

Last week at Bring ‘n Brag, one of the ladies showed us how she made candy sleighs for Christmas gifts. update! The lady who showed us the sleighs is Lois. Thanks Lois!

They were fun to make. We made a dozen of them in about an hour and a half (plus wasted time driving around town looking for Christmas ribbon!) I think it was much easier doing them together so we had extra hands. One person to hold while the other one glues… especially for the first step! First you glue a kitkat bar to two candy canes to create the base. We used hot glue and ran a strip of glue down each candy cane.

Next, attach 10 mini hershey bars on top, with just a drop of glue for each. You stack them in a pyramid, first 4, then 3, then 2, then 1, like this:

After all the glue is hard and secure, glue ribbon around your “packages” and a bow on the top. That’s it! so cute and fun and your recipient can keep it as a decoration or take it apart and eat all the candy!

some of our finished sleighs

Male Shoppers: Ready…Set…GO!!!!!!

It happens every year in retail. The last couple of days before Christmas, men come into the store with the deer-in-headlights look. They aren’t looking for their kid’s gifts…the wife took care of that. They aren’t looking for their parent’s gifts, teacher’s gifts, other relative’s gifts either, because the wife has taken care of that as well. Men are looking for that perfect “wife” gift. The one that says, “I was listening to you when you dropped ALL those not-so-subtle hints.” It is our job in retail to help men find that special gift.

It helps to know:

  • The name of her hair salon
  • The name of her massage therapist
  • Her favorite color
  • Her size
  • Does she even like sporting events
  • Is her bathrobe ratty, women generally love bathrobes
  • Think hard. What has she hinted at? If she has ever said, “I wish I had (……….). Buy it.

The Reason Plane Lights Are Dimmed for Takeoff Is Actually Really Interesting

The Reason Plane Lights Are Dimmed for Takeoff Is Actually Really Interesting
No, it’s not just for fun…
There are some things that happen during flights that most people never question. If you’re anything like us, then you just take for granted that certain things happen and you don’t need — or want — to know why.

The Telegraph has uncovered the reason behind one element of airplane protocol that didn’t previously have an explanation beyond “making the cabin feel cozy.” Or at least, that’s what we attributed the dimming lights at takeoff and landing to.Though it seems the real reason behind this cabin rule is actually a bit more interesting — and important — than the passenger’s comfort. It’s really all about keeping everyone safe.
“Dimming the lights allows your eyes to pre-adjust to darkness, so that you’re not suddenly blinded if something happens and the power goes out, and you’re dashing for the doors in darkness or smoke,” Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential tells The Telegraph. “The emergency path-lighting and signs will also be more visible,” he continues. “And it makes it easier to see outside, which helps you to maintain at least a basic sense of orientation — i.e. which way is up.” The reason you have to keep up the window shades during takeoff and landing is supposed to help in the same way — oh and it gives the cabin crew a chance to spot any external hazards that might hamper evacuation. Don’t you love it when things make sense?
