One Man’s Trash Is Your Storage Solution

If you can get your hands on one of these vintage 3 tier stands, do it. They can be spray painted to match bedroom or bathroom decor. What a clever way to contain clutter if there is a shortage of storage in a small room. Store nail polish, bath products, women’s and men’s fragrances, face cloths and much more. Teens would love one of these in their room for all their ‘prized possessions’.

Tip To Tell The Doneness Of Your Steak

Not much of a blog today, the picture says it all. To test the doneness of your steak by touch, follow this simple tip in the photo. Try pushing with your index finger on the opposite hand in the meaty area just beside the thumb. I have tried this and it really does work. Every great grill master has their own method but this is a good gauge. Happy cooking.

Design Trend For 2017 – Cork Walls

Cork coverings are a naturally decorative and modern alternative to traditional coverings.

They are available in a wide variety of unique styles, patterns and shades to compliment any décor or furniture style, and will add character and warmth to any room. Outstanding room designs created using cork to accent or contrast walls or ceilings.

Additionally, whether in tile form or roll form, besides being decorative cork coverings are also functional. Available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, these decorative coverings can also serve as tack and pin boards without damage to the cork. Ideal for offices, children’s rooms, and any other area where pinups are wanted.

Natural tones and shading of cork coverings can be kept or altered. There are basically four choices:

Plain natural surface – Cork is left in it’s natural state with no stain or surface treatment. Provides elegant but subtle décor effects.
Waxed cork surface – Some coverings are available with a natural waxed surface treatment. Wax enhances and highlights the natural textures, tones, and patterns of cork whileproviding grime protection to the cork.
Staining – Many cork wall coverings can be color stained to match or highlight existing room décor. The use of water based wood stains allows the natural cork patterns to remain while permitting the cork to match an infinite spectrum of colors. Pre-waxed tiles cannot be stained.
Painting – Cork can be painted if it is not already waxed. Painting of cork is seldom done since the natural patterns, textures and tones would be lost. However if cork is used for insulation purposes only and if the desired effect is not to show the natural color tones then cork can be painted.

Tip To Get Rid Of Pet Hair On Furniture

If you live with pets, you’ve probably accepted the fact that pet hair will be gracing your furniture no matter what. It’s one of those inevitable facts of life like aging and gravity. The go-to solution for pet owners is usually to have a LOT of lint rollers on hand. But, as handy as lint rollers can be, it can become expensive, wasteful, and time consuming to roll your entire home until it’s hair-free. Next time you’re cleaning, try this little hack instead and watch the pet hair disappear. It Figuratively couldn’t be more simple than this cleaning hack. You’ll be wondering why you never thought of it before! All you need is two tools to get started – one of them we’re pretty sure you have in your home Eventually.

– A bowl of water
– Cleaning gloves

Put on your handy dandy cleaning gloves. Dip them in the water and then swipe your wet hands over the couch – the hair will come right off.

Now you don’t want the gloves to be soaked…that will make more of a mess than anything. Just dampening them is perfect. And we also suggest having a bag or some area where you can dispose of the hair as it comes off. There will be a lot of it.

Spring 2017 Buying Show In Toronto

Spring 2017 Buying Show In Toronto

Ken and I are heading off to the annual spring buying show in Toronto. We rarely get to see much of Toronto as tourists but we do get to see, and buy, some amazing new products for display in the store. From the sneak peeks we have had from some of our suppliers, there is a great deal to choose from. New product takes anywhere from 2-6 weeks to show up on our doorstep and the store begins the spring changeover.

This show is where we need to buy Christmas decor 11 months ahead of time. It is so hard to wrap your mind around (and muster any excitement) about Christmas next year when you’ve barely packed up this year’s leftovers. But…in no time the orders are placed and Christmas products arrive from July to September.

We generally try to take in some of the seminars offered by the gift show, they are always informative and supply blog ideas for myself.

Charter House Interiors will be left in the capable hands of Mona and Bill while we are gone. Any questions or inquiries can be directed to them.

Make Your Own Donut Pillows

There are dozens of YouTube videos on how to make donut pillows and even more photos of what DIY-ers have created. This set of instructions is a basic guideline to making your own pillow. The donut in this photo clearly shows the fleece fabric you can use for the pillow. The 1/2 yard of fabric is a guideline, you can make larger or smaller donuts. If you cannot find a round object the size necessary, tie a fabric pen to a piece of string, adjust the string to the length you want the circle to be, hold the string in the center of the fabric and draw a semi-circle with the pen. You may need help from another person, or weight the fabric down to hold it in place while you draw the circle.

-1/2 yard tan fleece fabric
-1/2 yard felt or fleece in the frosting color of your choice
-small pieces of green, orange, yellow, white, blue, and dark pink felt (or for older kids use buttons)
-thread in tan and frosting color
-polyfill or batting material of your choice

-fabric scissors
-sewing machine
-fabric pen
-large circular object (such as a laundry basket)
-small circular object (such as a cereal bowl)
-straight pins
-sewing needle (optional)

Step One: Fold the tan fabric in half, and using a fabric pen, trace around a large, circular object from your home (like a laundry basket), or use a makeshift compass technique (as described above). Cut out the two layers of fabric at the same time.

Step Two: In the middle of the stacked circles you just cut, trace around a bowl to make the inside donut hole. Then cut out the opening.

Step Three: Now trace the large circle onto the frosting-colored fabric, cut out the circle, and trace a bowl in the middle like you did in step two.

Step Four: With a fabric pen, draw a free-form shape on the fabric to mimic the look of drippy frosting, and then cut out the shape.

Step Five: Cut out small strips of felt from your craft felt squares. These will be your sprinkles.

Step Six: Lay the sprinkles somewhat randomly across the surface of your frosting fabric, and pin them into place.

Step Seven: Using a straight stitch, sew each of the sprinkles into place down the middle of the felt pieces. If using buttons, sew them on. Try a mixture of sprinkles and buttons.

Step Eight: After the sprinkles have all been sewn into place, trim the hanging threads, then pin the frosting fabric (pink) onto one of the tan donut-shaped pieces of fabric.

Step Nine: Using a zigzag stitch, sew the frosting fabric onto the tan fabric you pinned together in step eight.

Step Ten: Now pin the two tan pieces of fabric together. Normally when you make a pillow you would pin the good sides together and flip them right side out after sewing. That’s not possible with a donut shape, so instead, you should sew the two pieces together right side out using a zigzag stitch along the edge. This stitch style will act almost like a serger and take care of any slightly uneven cutting of the fabric’s edge. Make sure to leave an opening on the stitching around the outside of the donut so you can fill the pillow with batting.

Step Eleven: Reach your hand through the opening you left in the stitching and stuff the pillow with batting.

Step Twelve: Pin the opening closed, and either use your sewing machine (which requires quite a bit of finesse) or a needle and thread to close the opening.

Wet Your Fingers To Retrieve Egg Shells

This is practically a daily experience for anyone who does a look of cooking, especially baking. You crack your eggs into the bowl, cringing the whole time, because you just know they aren’t going to break evenly. Sure enough, a little piece of egg shell falls into the bowl and gets stuck in the egg white. You poke around for a full minute trying to get the pesky thing out of there.

There is an easier way! And it is incredibly simple. All you have to do is make your fingers wet, and try again. You will be amazed how well this works. The little egg shell bit should adhere right to your fingers and come out. While we’re at it, do you hate when bits of egg white run down the side of your bowl and drip all over the counter? Try putting the bowl at the edge of the counter and a trash can under it. Any whites that drip down will go into the trash bin and you will not have to clean it up.
