Is 2017 The Year For Yellow

Is 2017 The Year For Yellow

Yellow has a bit of an image problem. It’s not loved like blue or chic like gray, but it is an excellent compliment to a great many colors.

Can yellow be overdone? Yes, easily. This is why so many people just breeze right past the yellow section of the color chips when deciding on what paint to go with in their homes. Paint is not the only option, wallpaper, in a subdued yellow pattern, brings cheery warmth to an entranceway. Patterned toss cushions, carpets, art and drapery with shots of yellow add that touch of oomph to a room. That is what yellow is; cheerful, sunny, and energetic. Its hiatus makes this hue poised to make a comeback. Design experts are already seeing evidence of a trend towards yellow, from pale butters to dark mustard.

It’s a mood-boosting hue: When faced with the seemingly never-ending darkness of winter, it’s so nice to walk into a bright room that reminds us of what a sunny day feels like. Yellow brings out the best in other colors. Though the color combo is often considered passé, just think of yellow and gray (which is always lovely). The contrast of yellow enhances the rich depth in gray. Even white trim and cabinets seems brighter and crisper next to buttery walls or a bowl full of lemons.
It amplifies light. Yellow makes rooms seem brighter, even when it’s a soft shade like in a sitting room. It has such a strong effect that you might want to be careful in how much yellow is used or the intensity of the shade of yellow. You might want to limit it in a bedroom, but it would definitely be welcome in a breakfast nook or in a home office.

It makes an impact, even in small doses: Whether big or small, yellow accessories are eye-catching enough to completely change the feel of a room, like a dining area in a space with limited lighting. It’s a quality that’s helpful if you want to tone down the impact of a yellow-painted room elsewhere in your home. For instance: If all of the other rooms in your home are white, a yellow kitchen might feel like too much of a bold statement. Weaving in accessories in similar hues throughout your home lessens the surprise factor. An excellent example of this is the HGTV show ‘Masters of Flip’. Their home stager will almost always carry a color theme (in this case, yellow) throughout the house. Each room will have a shot of color (or different shades of color) through bedding, fresh flowers, fruit, cushions, carpets, accent furniture, vases and accessories.

Yellow can have a sophisticated depth: Many of us think of yellow rooms in terms of just flat, solid walls. But you can use the color as a jumping-off point for patterns, to get a bit more interest into a room. Add some dimension or design to a room with a pattern in the same color as the wall but change the sheen for contrast.

Designer’s Tip: When deciding on a shade, keep this quality in mind. Yellow tends to be a bit bolder than a paint chip suggests, so choose a color one shade lighter than you want.

Make The Best Gravy Ever

Gravy is a make-it-or-break-it component of any meal, but it’s particularly crucial on Thanksgiving, Christmas or perhaps Easter. You can’t have turkey and mashed potatoes without a superb gravy to round it all off, and this is just the recipe to keep the bar raised. There is a more streamlined gravy, calling basically for just drippings, butter and flour but this version has a richer flavor to it and the incorporation of spices really makes it special. Don’t be disappointed with a lackluster gravy…this one enhances everything you serve it with and everyone loves it!
Classic Brown Gravy
Serves 10

Ingredients

turkey drippings
3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 cup red wine
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced
1/2 teaspoon fresh sage minced
kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
Directions
Once you’ve cooked your turkey, remove it from roasting pan, leaving drippings where they are, and transfer pan to the stove over medium heat.
Pour in wine and chicken broth and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until you’ve scraped up the bits stuck to the bottom of the pan.
Once all the tasty pieces are loose from the pan, transfer mixture to a fat separator or let cool slightly and spoon off fat, reserving both fat and remaining liquid.
Place 2/3 cup fat in roasting pan over medium-high heat. Once fat has liquified, sprinkle flour evenly over the top and whisk continuously until mixture is thick and paste-like.
Cook for 3-4 minutes, then (while whisking vigorously) slowly return saved liquid back to the roux-like paste.
Continue whisking until gravy is smooth, then season with herbs, salt and pepper.
Transfer gravy to serving bowl and serve hot. (It should still be liquid, as it will thicken as it cools.)

Meet Sam Toft – Artist

At Charter House Interiors, we have carried Sam Toft prints for several years now and have been a consistent good seller. These are fun, whimsical prints that can fit into most home decor.

SAM TOFT -ARTIST
Sam Toft is an English painter who is famous for her light humor, artwork, and paintings. Oil-pastel crayons are her favorite tools and she works with them quickly. Her work is done only on a small scale.
PERSONAL LIFE
Sam Toft’s first ambition was to work in the post office. Instead of achieving her dream, she became a silver-service waitress, a civil servant, a fire extinguisher salesperson, a catering manageress, a student, and a death grants advisor. She was even unemployed for a time. She has lived in many places in England. Today, she lives in Brighton. Toft graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Social Science from Kingston Polytechnic in South West London. Today, it is known as Kingston University. During that time, Toft had no idea what path to take or what career to pursue, but she was sure she would never become a poet. Due to her many previous different jobs and because she couldn’t seem to find her passion, she decided to make a drastic change in her life.

CAREER
Toft went back to Liverpool. She took a vocational course there and received a BTEC qualification in General Art and Design at the City of Liverpool Community College. While she was there, she was inspired by a teacher named Hering. This Liverpool Community College teacher gave her the confidence to pursue a career in art. Since then, Toft has made hundreds of handmade cards. She has also done a lot of illustration work, caricatures, and wedding invitations. She also paints, which is her favorite medium. Toft has been working with mixed media such as colored inks and oil pastels. She also uses the fingers-and-thumbs technique. She is the author of the characters Ernest and Violet Mustard whom she uses in her paintings. Her illustrations, drawings, and paintings have been published by The Art Group as cards and limited edition prints. Her work can be seen around the United Kingdom. Her art is also featured in galleries and art fairs. She also sells her work both in the United Kingdom and in the United States. Among Toft’s works are Black Dog at Brand Point Light, A Halting Sight at the Sugar Maple, Two Good Pumpkins, and Moon Riders. All of these are paintings that have a cartoon-like theme. She also has black-and-white art such as Keeping her Majesty Dry and Getting all his Ducks in a Row.

FUN FACTS
Toft’s character, Ernest Mustard, was first drawn while she was dawdling along the seafront.
Toft’s Ernest Mustard and Violet Mustard have pets.

Put Onions On Your Feet To Purify Your Body

**Editor’s Note** I have not tried this but I have seen many posts on how onions help with various ailments. What do you have to lose by trying this? Nothing. Onions are abundant and cheap.

Prepare this magnificent coating in the evening and place it on your feet right before going to bed. Now let the coating on to work over the night.

The coating is antibacterial and it improves the blood circulation. Therefore this coating will help you eject all the impurities from your body.

The key ingredient of this coating is the onion. Through the skin, the onion, penetrates deeply into the bloodstream and that way it purifies the blood.

In order to prepare this coating, first you need to cut the onion into thin slices and wait for a few minutes, or until the onion juice appears on the onion slices. Then place these onion slices on your feet. Next you need to wrap your feet in a transparent foil and finally you need to put on some thick socks.

If you want to warm your feet, you can use wool socks. The foil will keep this coating steady and tightly attached to your feet. The best thing is that you don’t have to worry about any unpleasant odors, because there won’t be any.

If your skin is too sensitive to onions, then you need to apply some greasy cream or almond oil on your feet, before placing this coating.

In the morning when you get up, take off your socks and remove the coating. Then wash your feet with cold water and then put on some wool socks to warm your feet. At this point your blood will begin to circulate very quickly. This treatment is especially useful for those who have diabetes and poor circulation.

This method is recommended for those who have health problems, but also is useful for perfectly healthy people. You should also apply this method when you have the flu, pneumonia and fever.

All-Weather (Even In Saskatchewan) Adirondacks

All-Weather Adirondacks. CR Plastic Products is a proud Canadian manufacturer of re-cycled plastics. In fact. it takes 579 plastic milk jugs to make just one Adirondack chair. By re-cycling your grade 2 plastic containers, you save millions of pounds of trash in our landfills. It’s a win-win for everyone. I have done a few blogs about this amazing product but it bears repeating. The screws used in the manufacturing process are stainless steel so they will never rust; this is truly all-weather furniture. Every year, they add more products to their line, they have introduced comfortable deep seating with SUNBRELLA fabrics and most pieces come in 16 gorgeous, vibrant colors. Check out their website for more details. Watch for our ‘early buy’ specials in the spring.

Easy To Make Pineapple Upside Down Cupcakes

This is my usual Sunday morning lazy day blog. It just sort of speaks for itself. This is a dessert where it will look as though you fussed, but didn’t. These cupcakes are a bit heavy, but they are good after a lighter supper or if you are having guests for dessert only. Spray or grease muffin tins. Make a white or yellow cake mix according to directions. Cut pineapple rings into quarters and place 2 quarters in each muffin space, add a maraschino cherry and pour the cake batter over the top. Bake at 350* for about 20-25 minutes or according to cake package directions.

Life Hack – Expand Your Paper Ketchup Container

You dunk a giant, double-patty cheeseburger (or a handful of fries) into a tiny paper cup of ketchup and—splat! More ketchup coats the table than your grub. Good news: Those frustratingly small paper cups are designed to be fanned to better accommodate your food. Tug the upper rim of the cup outward to expand.

How To Decide If You Need New Pillows

FINALLY FIND OUT IF YOU REALLY NEED TO BUY NEW PILLOWS.
The ultimate test to find out if you should replace your pillow? Fold it in half and if it doesn’t spring back into shape, it’s probably past it’s prime. If that’s the case, toss yours and buy a new one — it’ll help you sleep better. Or…if your pillow has seen a decade or two, it should be replaced.

7 Things That Make a Home Unsophisticated

7 Things That Make a Home Unsophisticated
The common denominator in all stylish homes? They show off your personality.
CREDIT: By Zoë Gowen
This article originally appeared on SouthernLiving.com.

The only thing holding you back from living in a sophisticated home is you. Here are seven easy mistakes to avoid:
1. You Rush Decorating
Ignore every thing you’re ever heard about one and done. Decorating is a constantly evolving process of bringing in a new piece and retiring others. That ebb and flow of things makes your home reflect where you are in life.

2. You Take It So Seriously
It’s your home, not a museum or a show. If you like wild patterns, then use them. If you’re really drawn to a kooky light fixture, buy it. You can balance these unconventional finds with more traditional pieces elsewhere in the room. Your mom’s Queen Anne chairs will take on a way cooler persona with teal leather seats and a Sputnik chandelier.
3. You Only Purchase in Sets
Nothing beyond towels, dishes, pots and pans, and flatware should be bought as a full set. The plucked-from-the-catalog-look lacks charm. Ideally, you want things to coordinate and complement, but not match. As decorator Phoebe Howard puts it, “You want cousins, not twins.” While it’s smart to invest in a quality sofa and coordinating upholstered chairs, never buy a suite of furniture unless you want to live in a furniture show room. Instead, mix different styles together.

4. You Assume Original Artwork Is Out of Your Budget
Chances are that most “sophisticated” homes have original artwork hanging from their walls – not reproductions that also hang on their neighbors’ walls. Shop flea markets, estate sales, even your own iPhone for photos to blow up and hang. If it catches your eye and the price is right, go for it.

5. You Think Collections Are for Grandmas
Curated groupings of things you love speak uniquely to you and your family’s story. Also, nothing is off-limits for collections: beads, textiles, taxidermy, silver, books. The key is how you display it. Check out how Rachel Halvorson pulled together her clients’ grandmother’s radio collection in a kitchen of all places!

6. You Create Rooms Not Actually Intended for People
Rooms should be special and hospitable. Places intended for sitting, drinking, reading, and talking with each other. Spindly silk upholstered antiques and prized oriental carpets don’t facilitate 21st century living. They are also not welcoming. Consider them the overdressed girl at the party futzing over her outfit complaining that her shoes hurt. Take cues from prized decorator, Bunny Williams who blends comfy seating to encourage lingering with dark rugs to camouflage real life accidents.

7. You Forget to Edit
You’re having so much fun assembling your bold fabric choices and quirky collections that you don’t step back to see how it’s all coming together. Living in visual chaos is as unappealing as living in a museum – so remember to take some things away or balance all the color with some needed white.
